Chaps,
At an unspecified location within the UK, Me and an Audi TT were enjoying an "enthusiatic" drive last night.
The most disconcerting thing is that he kept up surpisingly well considering I am humping out 260bhp...
Does anyone know what kind of powerplant these things have? Me and my mates were discussing it and Some of us thought she was turbo'd and some thought normally aspirated.
Anyone own one?
Regards,
astraboy.

Two models of TT - 180BHP and 225BHP.

I'd guess it was the later.

The low power version only has one exhaust (on the left I think), the other has two, one either side. Don't forget they're 4WD too...

Astraboy- TT's are either 180bhp or 225 bhp turbo's.
Quite a few 225's get chipped-AMD/MTM to name a few suppliers- and they can put out anything from 275bhp to 380 bhp.
Can be pretty quick from A to B, especially when then have been chipped.
Gareth.

Funny you should say that.....I had an equally "enthusiastic" drive with a lovely blonde lady in a 225 roadster with the roof down (on a lovely straight dual carriageway). Sat beside her up to 130 smiling, then got bored and left her. Good sport though.

hmmm I had a Brands hatch driving "lesson" in a TT and I was dissapointed by the performance and the handling. My m8 has the A3 T and he loves Audis rhumor has it they'll go to 255bhp and they're 4x4. Its all power to weight though remember..
I suspect that the TT is quite a bit leighter. u got the WRX model (assumin scooby eventhough ur name is Astra boy )

My Westfield is a lowly 147bhp but that REALLY flies only bikes race with me in that though (o and renalt 5 turbos ROFL)

Question

Must have been a 225 bhp or higher. I drive a colleague's 180bhp TT fairly regularly and it feels positively slow against the P1. A bit un-nerving on the limit as well so I'd pity those with 300bhp plus - the chassis isn't up to it.

Gordo

p.s. and they're all 4wd turbos i think

They (180bhp and 225) both have the same basic engine 1.8l 20valve but the 225 has twin turbos hence the TT name (although I always wondered therefore why the other wasn't just called an Audi T). The 225 definately has the quatro 4x4 system but I'm not sure if all 180's do. As mentioned in earlier posts there are many performance packs available including a 325bhp Ottinger!! (Excuse spelling!!!!)

Disco-Sorry to be picky mate but TT doesn't stand for twin turbo. Both the 180bhp and 225 bhp have a single turbo unit. They are both 4wd but in Europe 2wd also.

They have all only got one turbo, just different states of tune/specs of turbo. Same engine is found in 125hp form (non-turbo) and 150/180/210/225hp form (turbo'd)

The only story I heard about the TT name was a connection to the Isle on man race that one of the VW/Audi execs was a big fan of

I saw a white Ford RS500-wannabee in Farnborough last night with astraboy stickers on it. Was that you? If so, I'll come and say hello if I see you again. You should be able to easily bin off any of the standard TTs with 260bhp available to you, so maybe it was modded.

Yeah, that was me. Was that you in the P1 or was it the raw sounding WRX that you were in?
BTW, Never made any pretensions to RS500 ownership. She is a Cosworth in the purest sense. Totally standard in terms of bodywork. Even has the standard alloys. Engine aint standard though...
With regards to the TT, I saw the Quattro badge on the front grill, but it was a soft top. Do they make 225bhp soft tops now? Gulp.

Astraboy,
It has to be said mate that a 260bhp Cossie is relatively standard in Cossie power terms!!!

Maybe you should get the junk chip taken out and get a proper Ahmed Bayjoo 330bhp conversion. At least then you won't be overtaken by a poor mans porsche wanna-be!!!!

If that happened to me, i'd have to drive my cossie into a brick wall!!!!

Have fun!!!

Shaun.

You can get either body style in 180 or 225bhp, both are badged as quattro's and have twin exhausts so are very hard to tell apart.

180bhp is not really a performance car, think of it as a Skoda Octavia RS with 4wd losses to slow it down. 0-60 in around 8 seconds.
225 bhp version a bit quicker 0-60 in 6.6secs.
Kerb weights are between 1310 and 1460kg so its hardly a light weight.

Mate at work has a LHD 180bhp coupe, it only feels Mondeo V6 quick. Shouldn't worry a Scoob or Cossy.

Does your mates LHD 180BHP TT really have two exhausts? If I were you I would look before posting, as the 180 definatly has only one exhaust and the 225 has 2, My friend sells Audis, He has also confirmed this.

There is a lot of nonsense here regarding tts, but it is easily cleared up.

180 and 225 versions.

225 used to be six speed and 180 5 speed. both are now available in six speed. Both body styles available in both power outputs.

225 has larger 17 inch wheels and twin exhausts. 180 has single exhaust an 16 inch wheels although 17 where an option.

Both cars have 1.8 litre 20 valve engines.

To my knowledge the 225 has a a two stage intercoolers so maybe this is where the crap is coming from. Ie twin intercooler.

the engine is the same as the golf 1.8gti turbo, audi a3 turbo, audi s3 etc. just in different states of tune. It is also the same as the formula palmer audis as displayed at bedford autodrome.

All uk sourced tts are four wheel drive. European 180bhp versions were available in front wheel drive.

The engine is mounted transversely (longitudinal six cylinder from s4 doesnt fit apparently - rumours are now that it does - see next generation of tt).

This makes the four wheel drive system very trick. It uses what they call a haldex clutch to distribute the power bewteen all four wheels allowing complete torque transfer to any individual wheel. This is continously varied by the ecu, hence the dynamic problems due to lift off over steer when power was transferred mid bend from rear to front.

On the engine side also, there are rumours taht the internals of these engines are so strong that they can withstand 400+ bhp with no internal mods.

Matt,

Yes his 180bhp version has twin exhausts. Maybe something to do with it being a LHD import.

I'll ask him for some info in the morning.

For 18 pages of TT info have a look at

On the exhaust front:
I believe that Audi facelifted the TT this year, which involved putting twin exhausts on the 180 model.

Spent the last hour looking through my magazines, but cannot find the article

Hey Astraboy,

Mine was the "raw-sounding" one, not a WRX though. Just a Euro-Stars 25-Turbo (hehehe). The RS500 comment arose from not being able to see all of your car at first due to there being a hedge in the way. I could just see the whaletail sticking over the top and assumed it was an RS500. Don't see too many of the pre-Sapphire Cosworths. I pointed it out to my P1 friend and was quickly corrected by him because he is able to identify an RS500 by the top of its tail.

We'll have to go for a spin at some point, are you coming out to Germany next time? You can join the M3 convoy, that'll be three cars instead of two although I'm working on persuading a few other locals to make the trip.

What the Astraboy is keeping very quite is the fact that he was whipped by a Vectra V6 last night. Over 5 yards that is and then I thought I had proved my point!

(If I knew how to do it I would insert a couple of smileys here!).

The TT can be quick but I think a lot of the time it is the fact that they are deceptively quick that gets people. At the end of the day the chassis is from the Golf platform so I don't see how you can compare it to a proper rally car or sports car - i.e. Porsche. The Audi engines are very good for chipping but I'd imagine they would be quite hairy when they are up to about 300bhp?!

I have been looking at the UK TT Forum recently as a mate of mine is buying one and they really like to race other cars. one was boasting about buring off a P1 recently. Check it out here under the FORUM:
