over the past few days ive been reading various posts as to the need for SUL/Octain boosters for Jap WRX & Sti's.

I am seriously considering an Sti as my first Scoob (may as well jump in at the mad end eh?) BUT the words 'Melted Pistons' keeps coming up . is this problem as common as i think? or am i being paranoid?

Can ANYONE tell me what a 'Knock Link' is and what its does,,,,Please

The Knock link is an accurate bosch knock sensor, loom and a box of tricks with a set of LEDs.

This listens for "pinking", "pinging", "knock" or "det" (pre-detonation) (all the same thing ) in your engine which is a Bad Thing as it will contribute to oil film breakdown.

If you are running too lean, or too low an octane, this will cause pre-detonation to occur (which is where detonation occurs before it should, putting strain on all sorts of things)

Knocklink will show this as a bloody great red LED telling you to back off, take care and get your problem sorted.

Finally, don't be put off by the stories here. The failures are still statistically quite low, and there's serious investigation going on by some of the best brains to determine patterns - sustained high revs in high gear tend to cause a failure after the event... Though of course there are exceptions!

So let me get this right - a knock link is installed rather like a boost gauge? so you can visually monitor whats going on as you drive (giving it plenty, as you do ).

if you get a big RED light is this a warning or is the damage already done?

Please give me a nice possitive answer, as i REALLY REALLY REALLY want the Sti

oh yes, almost forgot, are they expensive?

It allows you to check that your engine is safe whilst giving it some welly.

The leds show progressively the level of knock as there's quite a few different levels. Take notice of them, and do something about the warnings, and no damage will be done hopefully.

Cost around 130 quid from scoobymania or BR Developments, who also supply the link so if you're really wanting to run a very safe map for ultra reliability you may want to speak to these people? But! You don't have to.
