Question

My air con has stopped working in the last 6 months. I think that this may be related to the engine-out work that was carried out 3 months ago (piston slap). I'm keen to work out what's wrong before seeing the dealer.

I've noticed that the engine speed does not change when the air con is switched on, like it used to. This makes me think that the compressor pump is not engaging. Tonight I noticed that there's a plate attached to pulley wheel of the pump. I presume that this is part of the clutch. Should this plate turn when the air con is switched on?
I presume that the clutch is actuated electrically and I have checked that the connector is plugged in.

Any other suggestions?

The problem will be looked at the end of the month by the dealer.

It will not "click in" also if there is not enough gas. I had this on my WRX and once it was re-gassed it all worked fine again.

Do you think that they let the gas out when they removed or dismantled the engine?

I couldn't see an obvious way of removing the engine without doing this.

...same concerns. Piston slap done and then no aircon. Subaru checked pressure and it was down. Suggestions either worn seals, no problem covered under warranty. OR chipped rad, £450....I hope not.

My Air Con wasn't doing anything, even though the button on the dash lit up when pressed. So I had it pressure tested and there wasn't any, turned out to be a stone hole in the condensor ( radiator in the front ) Dealer wanted 500 quid to replace it so I ended up getting it ally welded and regassed, cost me 120 quid. Its now fantastic, especially with all this sunshine we've had. Moral of the story, get a mesh guard fitted to air intake in the bumper before a stone causes much expense...

You can take the engine out without degassing. So it is possible that the engine work is unrelated.
