Question

Hi all,

Sorry for posting this in "general" and not "insurance". I will move it if it causes upset. Hoping for a speedy response.

What exactly do you tell your insurance if you want the PPP? I rang my broker today and they are going to try and see what Norwich Union, my insurers, say. Has anyone else got the PPP and insured with them? Is there a standard BHP that the PPP takes the car to? Do you have to specify the modifications individually?

Thanks for any advice supplied

Hi Paul

I intend getting a PPP ECU for my RB5 so I phoned my insurance first to check about cover. I am insured with DirectLine and I explained that it is a Subaru approved chip and it gives about 10% increase (218 to 240bhp) They said no increase in premium and have put it on my policy next to my performance exhaust (less then 10% power gain) I have told them about all my mods and they are only interested in performance gains.

I have found DirectLine very good with insuring Subaru's so if you have problems give them a call.

Good luck

Tim

Just insured my rb5 wrsport and tried to explain that it had the ppp from new (and what the ppp ment). I was told as it was factory fitted no additional premium because they only list 1 rb5 so this is taken into consideration in the premium (one group higher than standard turbo). That was with admiral. I don't know if this only applies to the rb5 or any official mod from subaru though- give them a try and see what they say.

Wink

Had the PPP fitted to my MY00 turbo, cost an extra 111 quid, it moves the car from grp 17 to grp 18 and is rated at 250bhp so up to 20% increase in power. Direct line is also my insurance co and they were very reasonable about it, just say its the performance pack from prodrive for your car and it may come under impreza turbo wr (not wrx!!)

Hi guys,

thanks for the reply. How do you know what the performance increase is though after the prodrive upgrade? Is there some kind of benchmark? For example, do Prodrive make any claims about the performance increase after the upgrade?. I find this whole insurance thing daunting as I always seem to get nowhere and worry about if they have actually understood me. In writing i will surely do though.

I could change my insurer I guess to Direct Line. Is there usually a penalty for switching like that? I will ask my broker tomorrow.

Thanks again everyone for the swift response

Cheers.
Paul

Cool

Prodrive claim (and rightly so! ) an increase to on average 250bhp and 250lbs of torque (my99/00) some normally push out slightly more than 250bhp but never seen any push out less (unless they use normal u/l fuel and not sul) the torque varies, some as high as 281lbs ive seen quoted but the midrange is very noticable
If you need more info check out

Although I dont on a PPP model when I have asked for quotes for decent companies (back of EVO) most ask if it is fitted and can adjust accordingly. The PPP seems the be the same as a Dealer fit option, its only pick and Mix mods than need BHP claims etc.

This is really frustrating me. My broker reckons that she said to the insurers what it does and it made it a wr sport package, not wrx. They reckon that it will put it up to a group 20 and an additional £700!!!! What the f***. thats not right is it?. Can someone please help me? If anyone has a MY99 PPP package and is willing to give me there name and insurance company do you think I could get a quote based on similar modifications? I just don't know what to say to the insurance company. Help.

When I swapped my MY99 with PPP and 17" wheels for a 22B Admiral sent me some money back on the insurance
They liked the fact the 22B was standard and hated the fact the MY99 was modded.

My experience (MY00+PPP) is that insurers don't generally know what the PPP is, I have to explain that it's made up of replacement hoses, new ECU and performance exhaust.

Prodrive do publish power and torque curves for cars with the PPP - they're in the WR Sport brochure that your dealer should have. I _think_ they quote 239 bhp and 258 lb.ft - conservative as always - but do confirm this with your dealer before quoting me to your insurance co.

In performance terms you are now equivalent to an RB5 WR (gp 18), but I doubt you'll find anyone who'll give you the same quote as for one of those.

I'm insured through Greenlight, who were happy to talk about (and even suggest!) mods, but I did have some problems getting them to record all my details accurately (simple administrative errors).

Andy.

Be very carefull when dealing with Admiral and PPP, when we chaged from a UK to an RB5 ppp last year they said no extra cost. Just before buying the car I rang up to double check, faxed them the sales brochure of the RB5. When they actually realised what it was they didn't want to touch it. As they had already agreed on the policy I MADE THEM HONOUR it. Double check your policy with them to make sure you're insured!!

I've just been in touch with the NFU regarding a PPP on my MY01. They're getting in touch with their underwriters and will get back to me. Not sounding healthy, will report here what they come back with.

So, the latest.

Rang Prodrive and they said that to say it was a 10% increase in power, manafacturer fitted. In addition there is a section in the owners manual for modifications and to send that to the insurance company. I couldn't find it so I rang my dealer and explained my grief. They knew nothing about such a section but offered to speak to the insurers for me, which is nice i thought. So i have referred them to the dealer and am awaiting a response. Whilst I was talking to the dealer he recomended Direct line and said that this was an official Subaru recomendation??? So I tried an online quote and got it for around £1000, with 350 excess, protected full no claims bonus. I am 25. Not too bad I thought so I rang them to add my mods and future PPP. The guy on the phone didn't really know what PPP was but recorded it as Prodrive said a manafacturer increase in performance of 10%. In addition alloys for £1000. All in all a quote for approx £1200. So I am reasonably happy with that. Once I get the documentation I am going to get the policy to explicitly say Prodrive on the manafacture upgrade.

I am tempted to change now and pay for this upgrade on my insurance now as adding it later may cause a bigger increase due to admin costs.

Something else good about DirectLine is they include track days for no extra premium I have check this with them on four occations and they class this as driving on a private road and as there is no time trailing, racing, etc then my normal cover is fine.

NFU just got back to me with a rather acceptable £70 pound upgrade. Bit disturbed to find out that my car is insured as a Group 19b at the moment, going up to Group 20, seems a little excessive.

What puzzles me here is the power gains quoted from Prodrive for the MY01 are quite different depending on whether you use SUL or NUL. So what do you quote knowing that you'll be using SUL?

NUL may result in a cheaper premium as some charge much more if the gain is over 10%, but if you do this are the likely to test your fuel in the event of a claim thus voiding the policy? Seems unlikely.....?

I've often wondered about the NUL/SUL issue wrt insurance. What about other performance-enhancing consumables such as octane booster, DOT 5.1 brake fluid etc?

PTMW! when PPP added went from Grp 17 to 19b. Standard UK MY99 before that (well 'cept for brakes, suspension & cosmetics but they don't mind about them things but I HAVE told 'em). Can't remember what the change was but it was 10% - 15% (so premium about £550 now I suppose). It might be that the MY01 is a v. new car & they have put it in a higher group than they should. Also, I know that they're normally very good, but they're not thinking that the MY01 WRX is the same as the grey imports are they? Worth checking. Are you using Karen & Chris in Northampton 'cos they know a lot about scoobs (well more than they did a year ago! ).

Just surprised about the banding having had Chris explain scoobs & the effect of what mods does what to premium at length.

I don't think things like fluids could affect your insurance. Its not like they will stick your car on a rolling road after the crash and validate the bhp. I can't really see that using super unleaded or different kinds of brake fluids is modifying your car, more like servicing it IMO. All I am worried about is some inspector, who is the one person in the insurance business that probably does know what PPP is inspecting the car and me not being insured for it.

I thought you had to use SUL on a PPP? If not then quote the NUL if it does make the difference between <10 % and > 10%

Hi

Im with Admiral - asked them if they would insure a MY99 with PPP.

The asked underwriters - and they said NO.

So im waiting until August to get a different Insurer - and get the car PPPed then. [though would like more fade resistant brakes too].

Puff,

Yup, I'm with Karen and Chris, and very nice they both are too. Checked and double checked with them and it's a 2001 WRX non import. £70's not going to break the bank so I've put my name down for the PPP... can't wait

When I changed from my last car, Mk 6 RS 2000, to MY'98 PPP Subaru, my insurance with the NFU went from Group 16 to 17B. The last renewal dropped from £460 for the Escort to £440 for the Scooby. I've been with them for 2 years only and they gave me back £20 loyalty bonus, and yes they do know about the conversion.

My neighbor put me on to them, he's been with them for years and currently owns a 328 BMW coupe, his last loyalty bonus was £128, down from £428 to £300. I think you all should give them a ring.
