Okay, so the boot install on my Legacy estate's finished now. The 2 PPI 10" subs are in, so's the amp, the changer, processor, MStation, LPG tank - basically, I've no room left, but it sounds good

So, time to start on the front of the car. I'm planning on building tiny cabinets, to replace the front speaker mounts, so that I can have the mids in (angled) sealed enclosures. Not a problem with that - just a bit of woodwork.

The problem is the tweeters. The standard location is in the door, where the mirror bolts on. But, that's too low (if I drive with one hand on the top of the steering wheel, you can barely hear the driver's side tweeter), and really poorly angled for imaging.

Has anyone gone down the road of building pods for the tweeters? If so, where did you mount them, and what/how did you make them from?

There's a large school of thought that recommends positioning your tweeters close to your midbass drivers in order to minimise the phasing differences but more importantly to get 'em away from being close to you in order to minimise the relative delay between the two speakers.

Footwell builds are popular in the soundoff scene still for this reason. Or held coherently above your midbass driver works well...

Ah, but I don't have to worry about phasing issues, because I've got an Alpine time-alignment unit So, I can concentrate on perfect imaging positions without worrying about the phase problems. (Works very well, incidentally - my 406 sounded fantastic using the time-alignment)

What, you can time align your tweeters separately to your woofers?

 

Yup
6-channel's worth of time-alignment. Two channels for the tweeters, two for the mids and two for the subs.
No rear speakers - much nice sound
