Default Can't Read ECU with ECUFlash – 16-bit DBC Subaru (ECU ID: 4304594005)

Hi all,

Hoping someone can help. I’m trying to read the ECU on my JDM Subaru Impreza STi with a genuine Tactrix OpenPort 2.0, and I’m stuck. RomRaider logger works perfectly — I can view live data and logs — but ECUFlash refuses to read the ROM. Here’s everything I’ve tried and confirmed:
ECU ID: 4304594005 CAL ID: A4TJ121B
Vehicle: JDM Subaru Impreza STi, drive-by-cable, 16-bit ECU
Tactrix Firmware: 1.17.4869 Tactrix Driver: 1.02.4870
ECUFlash Version: 1.44.4870 (I’ve also tried 1.29 but had DPinst64 errors)
RomRaider: Logger works, SSM fast-K communication confirmed
Green test connectors: Connected (fans come on, test mode active) Black 2-pin jumper connectors: Connected
Definitions: Confirmed correct XML for ECU ID, flash method is wrx02, memmodel 68HC16Y5
Dummy ROM loaded in ECUFlash before attempting to read Tried 'Test Write' – fails all
USB cable confirmed working, COMMS confirmed via RomRaider
Logs show denso02_bootloader_cmd_start repeated then it fails. It never reads the ROM. Any ideas? Could it be a flashing lock or something physical I’m missing? Has anyone had to do anything special for a DBC 16-bit JDM STi with this CAL ID? I wonder if I'm missing something in terms of the flash connectors?

Cheers in advance!

The black one isn't the flash connector, it's the white one. Try leaving the black ones open and put your flash block onto the white one and see what happens.

Thanks for the info. It was another forum where I had read about the black connectors being for read/write, is that not the case? I've seen a million and one posts about a 2 or 4 pin white connector that requires a jumper but I can't seem to find one. I have a white 16 pin but that's the only other free connector there is. I'm assuming that's not it?

100% definitely isn't the black connectors. And the 16pin isn't it either, there should be a 3 or 4pin white connector depending on which loom is in the car (3pin old style loom, 4 pin new style loom). Your openport cable came with the 2 adapters so keep looking up there for it.

The "16 pin white connector" in question, is actually the 15 pin OP connector used for adding accessory options via a "goodwill" adaptor connector, although looking at the red wire taps its been put in use for something already although that accessory, seems to have bitten the dust leaving just cropped wire tails.

"Goodwill" connector

I've looked a few times but I'll remove the plastic trim under the wheel tonight and have a proper root round, I've may be just been expecting it to be more visible than it is, found the black connectors and assumed I was on to something. Thanks for your help so far!

Interesting thanks Don! It's lived a long (and possibly colourful) life in Japan before it came to me. Was the goodwill connector made with specific Subaru accessories in mind? Or was this for supporting aftermarket accessories?

Can be used for either.
It's also present on UK/European models from about 2006/2008 depending upon model, although for us it is only populated with 8 of the 15 outputs
This post gives further details of both UK and JDM outputs......

Currently I use it for my Pioneer Sat Nav's various inputs and my DLR angel eyes from the 8 tap out wires and then daisy chain both a Subaru auto folding mirrors module and a Subaru auto Headlights/ semi-auto Wiper module.

Also used for some Subaru gauge addons.
Your elusive connector, if not used previously, may be taped up high out of the way using pink tape.

Thanks both you were right... Not looking hard enough! It just wasn't where I expected it to be, tucked way up there behind a load of other stuff.

Plugged in and managed a successful read

Do you have the connection diagram for that connector?
