Default Knobblies

Have just pushed the button on a resto of our slightly crusty but much loved ‘98 classic turbo wagon. Being in the Hebrides with all the weather, mud, potholes, cows and sheep on mostly single track roads where two wheels (and sometimes 4 - wasn’t me, honest) off the road onto the soft verges is not uncommon, I fancy some knobblies on our winter set of standard 16s. Any ideas on possible tyre choices please?

Someone else' will confirm but I think in terms of M/T or A/T tyres you're going to struggle on sizes. Looking at availability online I think the closest size option is 215/65R16 and they will very likely rub without arches being rolled and plastic liners being trimmed. So get that confirmation first (as well as account for speedo error).

Otherwise Stock size is 205/50R16 is very limited, so the only tyres in that size will be all-seasons and winters. That said I've been swapping knobblies on customer's 4x4 pickups (Rangers etc.) for Cross-Climate2s to help improve fuel economy with no complaints yet...but they rarely put a tyre on the verge round here (My Golf probably goes off road more LoL).
