Car specs,

• Impreza STI Jap Import 1997
• Standard engine
• Td04 turbo
• Standard injectors
• FMIC and induction kit
• De-cat
• Alcatek ECU - Remapped by Andy Forrest
• Walbro fuel pump

For the past 8 years this car has been a track car. Bought as a standard import from RA Motorsport Scotland. It was then slowly upgraded to become what it is today.
The car has been absolutley faultless for the past 8 years, it has never missed a beat.

For the past two years due to covid the car hasnt been out much, i do live on a private road and therfore it does get ran from time to time. however the past two months the car has developed a few issues. The car will crank and crank for 20-30 second stuttering before it will eventualy burst into life. Once running it ticks over fine, no adverse noises and no smoke from the exhaust. As soon as the throttle is pressed, even just the slightest touch the car will hessitate and cough and splutter almost cutting out. even once warm the car will continue to crank for 10-20 seconds before starting.

I have emptied the fuel tank, filled with fresh super unleaded and NF Boost. I have checked all hoses and found no loose or cracked hoses. I have just replaced the spark plugs, the old items werent in the best shape but still no change. I checked the resistance in the two pin coil packs and measured 1.0 - 1.3 ohms which i reccon is just the resistance of the leads.

If any one has experianced this before, any assistance would be appreciated.

Running a maf or mafless

Fuel pump or dodgy relay, ive had a walbro fail and the relay both separately, the relay failed intermittently would work perfectly if you held it in its plug at a certain pressure

I’ll double check the fuel pump and the relay like you have mentioned and see how I get on.

Check the maf also, disconnected at idle and see if there's a difference check it's not dirty etc

Also check for any leaks or splits after the maf to the turbo ( I know you said you had checked but double check)

Also my fuel pump relay did that after running fine all day at croft

I packed the car up got in to set off home and wouldn't start!!

ok I’ve checked all the hoses from filter to intake and all look to be good . No issues.

checked the fuel pump, first really kicks in to prime and second relay kicks in during cranking . This was proved using a test lamp at fuel pump multi plug. Could still be a fuel pump issue though so not discounting that.

when running I unplugged the MAF and this made no difference, still running like a bag of spanner’s. Could this be a MAF issue ??

Most likely maf then you need to clean it or replace ro see if it changes
