Hi All, got a MY2000 Sport Wagon non-turbo, and it's got a cone air filter instead of the standard one. It's been sat on my drive for 12 months (it's actually my daughters previous car) and I'd like to get it MOT'd. Is there anything I can do or add to the petrol tank to improve the emissions? Is the cone filter a better bet than having the standard air filter or would it be better to have the original filter reinstated. I don't have the pipework from air intake to filter box.... Can anyone post me a pic of what it looks like. Would the emissions improve if I fitted new plugs... engine ticks over and runs fine, btw.... Thanks for any advice and thoughts.
btw(2) I'm a Mondeo diesel driver and am very rusty on petrol motors, I don't even know if its got a cat fitted...thanks again!

 

That car has a cat.
Air filter shouldn't make any difference.
I take it you're struggling with emissions. First stop is always a routine service. Replace plugs, change oil & filter and clean air filter. If a car sits for too long, the fuel goes off. It becomes sticky and doesn't burn well. Replace with fresh. No MOT means you can't give it a run. Old fuel can also clog injectors. Try cleaner in the fuel. I've heard good reports of Terraclean. It will only cure certain things though.

 

Thanks John 37, reply much appreciated 👍. I was thinking in terms of less air in if filter is inefficient, = more emissions. I'll look into getting new plugs then for starters.
Here's a pic of the cone filter. It has a hard outer shell rather than an exposed all-over mesh... so the intake is thro' the end that's aimed into the wing. Do you think it's ideal?

It results in a great engine note, but how good is it for air intake?

 

My advice would be to drive to your testing station in a lower gear and keep the revs up and get some heat into the cat. Don't let the car stand too long at the testing station then see what happens, there are plenty of products available to help should there be an issue.

That's an odd looking air filter. I thought you meant a K&N one. You could just remove it for the MOT. If it improves emissions, replace it with something that works.
