Default Wrx sti detonation in low rpm

Hi was wondering if anyone can help, I've got a 09 330s that's just been rebuilt with forged internals new turbo ect. I went to take it for a remap and got told it is suffering from bad detonation. And they put this down to either the new Pistons being wrong and the compression being to high or the avcs being at fault. If anyone can help would be much appreciated.

Isn't this what mapping is supposed to address? When I had my engine forged and the turbo upgraded it was found to be detting badly once it had been run in. The late JGM mapped it it out and 15,000 miles later it's still going strong.

How can pistons be "wrong" and cause detonation???

Agree with Paben, mapping will adjust the timing and fuel to stop detonation, that's the whole point of mapping it!

Find somewhere decent to map it. Are you sure your understanding what they are saying?

if the wrong pistons were used then it would indeed alter the compression ratio and as said it gets mapped to stop make it run right and not det. Some mappers have a nasty habbit of pushing the map too far causing det higher up, but not low down.

I've had this recently too. I checked my plugs last night and regapped them as the gap was too big. Also going to run it on power ( tesco 99 before) and new belt. Was told if it's a tooth out it can throw it off

Thanks for the replys. What I meant was they may have used high compressions Pistons and a 0.78 head gasket instead of a 1.2 then the compression may be to high causing det. The mapper said they only way he could map it to run and not det was using race fuel. He couldn't change the timing enough to stop it.

There's something wrong somewhere. High compression pistons don't cause det that can't be mapped out. Don't say if you don't want to but who built the engine, who was the mapper?

If you're Surrey based there are plenty of specialists round here, I'd be getting a second opinion.

Ah, research wins! That's about half price, probably where the problem lies.

Wont be anything wrong with Andy's engines. I suspect amateur mappers. get it to a reputable mapper

+1, he built my 2.1 shortblock.

Although I did have an issue with mine where the knock sensor was hearing noise (Not DET) and pulling timing. This was all adjusted by Duncan a while ago and has been fine since though. Forged lumps are noisier than standard lumps so it could be something similar for the OP.

Thanks for all the advice. On of the reasons I used them is they map some of andys cars for him. But I will be giving Duncan a call in the week to seek his advice on the matter

Not being funny or taking anything away from any mapper on here, but , at some time or other , they were all "amateurs" .

That's what an opensource map costs, the £550-£600 others charge is for Ecutek and the extra cost is Ecutek's license.

They have there own in house dyno. Which brings the price down abit. And they are one of only a few company's that will map a 330s without having to get a ecutek code to get into it

Without purchasing the ecutek licence that's not going to happen or everyone would do it!

Both them and Edd at fusion can do it without. If your clued enough you can hack through just about anything. From what I've heard it's not easy to do hence why not every one does it

Your problems would suggest that perhaps they can't do what they claim.

Some mappers map on the road, others on a RR.
Just because we are used to being fleeced, it doesn't mean that £300 will necessarily get you a bad job.
In the case of the OP though the mapper's comment sounds strange unless the ignition has been retarded as much as possible and it still detonates?
I have never heard of this place and would take it to someone reputable, personally.
