Hi guys, new back to scooby ownership after a few years away..quick question?, I have the sti hatchback, and checking my engine oil level, one Side of the dipstick says it's on max,the other side is about 5mm lower.. Anyone else had this? And which side should I trust? Kind regards Peter.

trust the side with the markings on it as long as you are putting the dipstick in with the correct orientation, in that the oil can symbol on the top of the dipstick is the right way up.

dealer told me to dip and wipe off twice etc, then dip again and look atthe level on teh under/back of the dip stick to give refference on how much oil you have.

my front level is always lower than the back level.. on the same stick

Cool, thanks mate..same here, the front of mine is always lower.. And in my eyes,it did make sense to measure from the highest point.

stumbled upon this while digging for other stuff

5. Check the oil levels on both sides of the dipstick. The engine oil level must be judged by the lowest of the two levels. If the oil level is below the low-level mark, add oil so that the full level is reached.
