Default Which gearbox oil?

Hi all

Sorry to pester you all again and with a question that's probably been asked a million times already.

I've got a 51 plate Bugeye WRX which is having some gear box troubles.
Before I start replacing synchos and clutches etc, my local mechanic said we should start off by simply replacing the gearbox oil with fully synthetic and see if it makes any difference and if there's any nasty bits in the old oil.
This seems sensible to me, but I've seen on some threads that people are saying that fully synth makes WRX gear box synrchos worse!
So, could anyone tell me what gearbox oil I should try for my bug that has troubles getting into 3rd gear at high revs please.

Cheers

Jay

Try the redline shockproof first and if that don't improve it, nothing will

Thanks Dan

I've PM'd Oilman, just waiting for a reply.
I'm not sure about Redline Shockproof, after doing some digging, it's seems it's not supposed to be used in gearboxes with synchro's because it over lubricates them and can cause "synchro glaze" .
Not sure I like the sound of that lol

Edit**

I'm not going to use Shockproof, from what I've read from a few sites, is that it works like a dream, but does cause issues with synchro's because
a) it's too slippy and synchro boxes do need some grip
b) it turns into a paste which works well but clogs small pipes, pumps and meshes that are used in synchro boxes.

Here's a post from the NASIOC forum with a Redline Rep saying NOT to use Shockproof in Soobys.

Need to find an oil that works like shockproof but works on synchro boxes.

That's what SW Autos have recommended me to use on my P1 box.

It's a GL5 oil, so is a bit more slippery than some other oils, but Imprezas require a GL5 gear oil.

Lots of people use the Shockproof oils in Imprezas, Skylines and Evos with synchro boxes and it often improves the shifts.

Cheers
