Should I Have Lost to an M3 ?!!
If it was an M3 - which by reading your post suggest "Most bl00dy definetaly" then a P reg would have at least 321bhp in standard form.
Not boasting but I can hit the speed limiter at 155mph on a particular 3 mile bit of road. It just keeps pulling - and pulling - and pulling. Nice thing is you can still have a civil conversation with the person sitting next to you (whilst they cling on to the seat and **** all over my leather).
Jolly good.

Jesus those cars are quick !
Last night I had the best/shocking 20 minutes in my Scooby - EVER !
I'll cut all the crap, basically I came across a BMW M3 who was probably doing what I was doing (looking for bikes to race
) He booted it and so did I. I couldn't really tell how much difference there was in performance because he was already slightly in the lead.
When I caught him up the road opened up and we let rip. Now I wasn't expecting to keep up (he would have close on 300 BHP, I have 238) BUT, I wasn't expecting him to open up as much as a lead as he did
The most shocking part was that he anhiliated (sp) me on the corners
I consider myself a competent and good driver, and I knew this partuicular bit of road very well, but my Scoob was all over the place ! His lead actually increased over the twisty stuff
Just a few reasons why this might have happened (IMHO of course
)
- it was a rally driver at the wheel
- I am in fact a crap driver
- the big wide tyres on the back of the M3 helped with stability
- his car was tuned
I love my car to bits. But this did shock me a bit. I would have accepted losing a bit of ground on the straights, but not so much in the corners
It wasn't all doom and gloom though. It was the first car that has "triumphed"
over mine, and when we went our different ways I flashed him and he stuck his thumb up
Now this isn't a dig a Scooby's, or sour grapes, I was just genuinely shocked how fast his car was. Pit it against a P1 and I'm sure it would have been much more even. I was still proud of my babe Scooby though
Thanks for reading.

Driver makes a big difference now I'm not saying your a bad driver but there is always someone out there better
Unfortunatly
Plus the M3 when moving is really really quick.... Off the mark you would have had him to about 70-80 then he would have come back past and left you standing
I've seen well driven pugs get round a track quicker than scoobs.... Could have been Jenson Button at the wheel or someone as he has one of those
I consider myself to bean ok driver not the best no-ones perfect and my wee pug got a pasting from a BMW 2.3 cuz the guy could really drive
I can normally beat those as well
Cheers

I have an M3. Totally standard at 331bhp.
When it is dry an M3 out performs a 240bhp Scooby in a straight line and on corners. My brother and one of my mates have UK 2000 turbos and openly admit that on a good, dry day the M3 just grips like mad (245/40/17 tyres on the rear helps) and blows them away.
What you must remember is that they cost 40 grand new whereas a Scooby closer to 24 grand (ish, am I right?) so you would expect to be the quicker of the two. To handle an M3 effectively you do have to be more than an "OK" driver. I haven't mastered mine yet (had it 6 months) and still very cautious about giving it anywhere near full whack on anything less than a straight, dry, flat road. It comes with experience I suppose.
My M3 is currently for sale on the for sale section of this site, I'm getting an Evo VI or STI. Maybe I could tempt you...?!
Chin up though - your car is quicker than 99.999% of cars in the "real world" so don't worry. If it really gets you down then, well, just buy one. Cheaper to insure than scoobies too and they do 31mpg average. Job done....!!!

LONGUN - Sorry mate but an M3 Evo would only be behind a Scooby for the first 20-30mph. The initial whip away from the line of a scooby would last about 2 seconds after the M3 comes past.
Standard M3 Evo does the quarter in 13.4 secs if driven correctly.
M3 is 286bhp from L - N reg (1995)
M3 Evolution is 321bhp from N (1996) - T reg.
Evolution is a six speed and has 260 ft/lb torque.

I saw a M3 at Santa Pod a while ago against a RB5 and it was only 3/4 of the way down the track the M3 went back past ran a 13.6 something and I think the scooby got 14.4 if memory is correct... Thats the only time I've seen the two cars up against each other maybe the M3 got a really bad start that where I got my comparison from. sorry...
Got to drive an M3 once and will agree you've got to know how to drive them I didn't go very fast at all was two scared too... Wasn't my car after all didn't want to have to replace the thing... Only drove about 2 miles as the owner (My neighbour) was pissed and didn't want to leave it down the pub (I haden't been drinking) so I did the right thing and left the pug at the pub and drove his home
Luxury for about 5 mins tho

It was a 306 XSI 2L 16V with NOS last week but is now currenty off the road having a 406 8V turbo lump fitted and I'll be leaving the NOS on as well
Should be 210bhp when finnished
and should be finnished by the end of the month
Was considering a scooby replacement instead of doing all that to a simple pug but I love the car and want something a bit different
I will get a car that is fast standard one day however I'm having fun with the pug at the moment and love the car
I'm currently saving for the next car. I had enough money in the bank if I sold the pug to get something around the £15,000 mark but want to keep the pug now and save a bit more so I can buy another car and keep the pug
I want the beswt of both worlds

Cheers

LONGUN - I do know how you feel. My second (and best car...ever....even better than my M3 was a Citroen AX GT).
EVERYONE F$$CK OFF AND STOP LAUGHING ! ! !
It was the most fun thing ever - I loved it and miss it like mad. It had 39k miles on a H reg and was immaculate black. Not a single mark on it. No exhaggeration, it was showroom condition. I modified it sensibly to about 120bhp (in a car that weighs 750kg) it was incredible. I would overtake 200bhp RS Turbos on the outside on most corners - just kept the throttle planted and steered the thing.
I am starting to well-up and get teary so I'll leave it there. Just enough time to say that I am looking for another one. I'll never get one as good but plan to strip it out and mod it to about 150bhp (it will weigh about 600kg when complete). Can't wait.

There was a French Car Show on Sunday at Avon Park Raceway in Stratford apon Avon
And the AX club where there saw a AX run a 14.9 don't know what was under the bonnet but it was quick. Also a twin engine R5 turbo that ran a 11.87
Was very very impressive.
Must admit I drove a standard one once about 2 years ago and was impressed for a little 1.4 it goes well and I think if memory is correct they mostly fiberglass so light weight as well
On a slightly different note I'm watching Pink Floyds the wall on sky at the moment and it is really wierd and a bit sick
Cheers

Speaking of Citroen AX GT's... I had two, a grey one and a red one and loved em... Great little cars (Grey one was my first ever car
), loads of poke, fun handling and whats more you could detach most of the trim to save more weight
Learn't all about lift off oversteer in the grey car, but thats another story

I had a tear up with an E36 M3 Evo convertable on friday up the M3 near junctions 8 to about 4, was already doing about 90 when he came up behind me, left mine in 5th and booted it, altho I could get ahead for a while by the time we were hitting 120 he was all over my bumper.
Done the same thing a few more times, but at 110 plus he was all over me.
The thing with M3's is they've become so common (for a bm motorsport car) that you kind of underestimate them.
My cars got 278bhp/264lb so its no slug, all I can say is nice one Mr M3, very nice doing buisness with you

M3's are easy meat in non evo form, your power to weight will be enough to get you past one (had ago against 2 and one was whilst my car was poorly with only 224bhp and 240lbs of torque) and wasted the first, hacked off the second cos he couldnt keep up off a roundabout
so let him past and caught him up (he wasnt too impressed cos a scoob caught him
oh well, try one in the wet, its more interesting

I had a race once with M coupe (same engine as M3 but in the Z3 hardtop body) in my brother's car that probably has 240bhp.
It was fairly even up to 30 (it was dry) but as he tried to power away, the **** was all over the place, very twitchy and I had the measure of him through the bends (The suspension on my brother's car is uprated far more than the engine).
However, we came to a stretch of motorway and due to him being held up by another car, I jibbed round them and I managed to get in front of him and build up about a 400yard lead.
I had my foot to the floor in a straight line at motorway speeds
and a 400 yard lead with no one in front of me to hold me up and he caught me LIKE I WAS STOPPED. In a straight line these things are awesome (0-100 in 11.6) and at three figure speeds upwards they will eat a lightly modded Scoob.
They did a test once on Driven with a 22b, M3 Evo and Audi S4 I think and the M3 bummed them both over 100mph. 3.2 litres and a mountain of torque, it's bound to. Scoobs aerodynamics leave a lot to be desired too.
Just my two penn'orth
So, no I wouldn't worry. As someone said you could have 2 Scoobs for the price of an M3, so they SHOULD be good. Console yourself with the fact that at such a price difference you evn came close
Cheers

I had an M3 Evo about 2 years ago. 98 (R), bloody lovely car and it was de-governed too. one weekend morning (2am), i decided to hammer it down the M4 and asked a mate to look at the speedo, which indicated 165mph. Didn't want to take my eyes off the road as i was slightly "on the edge".
The M3 is an amazing car and as some ppl on here have said it just keeps on pulling and pulling. What we all must remember is that normally aspirated and turbo'd cars behave very differently. After all is said i think after owning the two cars in question that the scooby does very very well. It has two more wheels to drive and has give or take 100bhp less than the M3. (e36) BMW M3 = Expense and lack of driver involvment. The e30 M3 was a better car! On the other hand to drive a scooby is such a pleasure. Everything about it is just "right"!
Well thats just my opinion on this matter so i guess i'll shut up now

Right.....I have a P1, the other day I was casually driving at a steady 70 (ish) up a local dual carriageway near where I live, When this new M3 decided to sit on my bumper after overtaking a few cars, I was on the inside lane. I guess he wanted to see what I had as he had plenty of chances to overtake me (but didnt)...Anyway, Cut to the Chase (Pardon the pun) I decided to drop it into 4th and boot it, i imagine he did the same coz he stuck to me like glue and again, I didnt lose him on the twisty bits either....Much Respect!!!
