Some tool opened their white car door into my blue scooby and decided to cheese it before it before I noticed.

No dent, but a scratch and a white mark. So I had some spray paint made up and went to work. I masked off the area and papered around it suffificiently, I lightly sprayed the area and left it to dry.

About 4 hours later when I suddenly remembered it was still there (got busy doing something else) I ran down stairs slowly removed the paper and tape, but some of the spray had ran into the tape and I now have a perfect 1 inch by 3 inch rectangle. The smudge won't come off with tar remover

I was thinking, can I sand the affected area down and spray over? Or is there another, better way to sort this issue?

I work in a bodyshop, with all due respect you are what we would class as....a nightmare! Haha.
These home spray jobs cause so many issues, and regardless never look good. Unfotunatley dude the only choice you have is to get it down a decent bodyshop and have it properly re-done. Theres a reason why bodyshops have such expensive equipment and spray booths, along with trained staffed who get paid well.
If it was as easy as that to do on your drive then bodyshops would be out of business.

You can get a decent finish outside on your drive but you still need proper equipment and know-how.

 

Wouldn't some panel wipe or neat IPA take the new paint off leaving almost what you started with? Must be worth a try. Then someone might be able to polish away most of the original damage.

 

Clay bar and polish might undo what you did, if you act fast.

 

Just a quick wipe with some gun wash thinners will take it off then machine polish it back, up

Then slap your self in the face and go to a decent bodyshop.

 

I honestly thought it would be easy. Think I'd best leave it to the professionas less I make it worse. Am just trying to sort my car out myself rather than always rely on others!

It would have been easier to spray the car white to match the scratch

On a more serious note, I had a similar situation, supermarket trolly rash grrrr scratches and gouges in the panel the most cost effective way for me was to buy a mint door off fleabay for £60
