Default Imac-applemail. Lost all messages, how can I get them back ?

We have an iMac and use apple mail. Recently we can receive mail with no problem but cannot send email, they just sit in the outbox. All passwords are correct on the preferences account panel.
We read that a reloading of apple mail will solve the problem so we clicked on the - (minus) button on the account pane to delete the account and then the + (plus) to reload. It worked fine, we can now send mail BUT…. scream loud !!!!!
This has deleted all the past 5000 emails that were there and used for reference. Is there any way to get these lost emails back or to find them ?
Thanks
Brian.

How is your mail set up? If it's IMAP then your messages are on the server, just set up your account again, if it's POP then you deleted your mail when you deleted your account.

Hopefully you're using Time Machine for Backups, here are instructions for recovery http://www.macissues.com/2014/12/07/...-time-machine/

Has the price come down or did it sting a bit?
