Jan 2006 iMac finally retired.
She has been epic! 9 years of faultless service for £1000 and still going for £100 on eBay!
Replacement is a late 2008 iMac which I picked up for a favour.

There has been some cracking deals lately for macbooks at about £800 surely these must be a better option as the only reason I have a desktop is a downloading machine if it wasn't for that I doubt I would bother. It cost me enough to have a 2560x1600 monitor and gpu to support that res for games
I just checked the specs for that year model and what a piece of crap that is, I think a cheap phone would do more than that. If that spec lasted you as long you must only browse the web on it as it can't do much more?
This new one feels like a rocket ship, runs Yosemite and the screen is massive! I'll use it a lot more.

It does everything better and is bigger, runs Yosemite pretty well and if I find a SSD and a couple of stick of memory for a good price it'll be even better. Another couple of years of use at least.

Surely something like this would be a better option for a used pc? there were cheaper but this just seemed like an ok spec.

My good friend moved to a 27" Retina, video munching monster, his Dad got his old 27" and I got his Dad's cast off which used to be his sons. The favour was making that happen and thankfully as it's Apple all three migrations were perfect with mine taking a bit longer due to the change of architecture.
My 2006 iMac is going to my brother in law, he currently has a 06 Dell desktop, it's a magnitude worse than my iMac, totally awful in fact, it'll be years until the '06 iMac is that bad.
Thats good going, my 11.99 month old macbook retina's ssd drive has just failed, i've booked a genius bar appointment a day after its warranty expires, i hope they'll sort it else i may have to wrap it around them
Read up on your rights and you will be ok, your warranty is with the retailer and luckily your retailer is the manufacturer as well

I always buy Apple stuff from John Lewis - free 2 year full warranty. Just replaced my 2006 Macbook with a new Macbook Air to use alongside my iPhone and iPad. Yosemite and iOS 8 means iCloud finally delivers what I want.
