Our main TV is looking as though it's on its was out, 7 year old 42 inch LG Plasma, so I'm looking to replace it with something a bit bigger 50inch or bigger if poss. Being s tight arsed northerner I don't want to spend more than £500-£550 ideally. What is confusing me is the 100htz 400htz etc. which is better? It's mostly for watching films and TV, though I do have a PS3 I sometimes play on. 3d would be nice. I've seen this at currys which seems good value for the money.

The 100Hz, 400Hz is the refresh rate of the screen. Basically the higher the number the smoother the motion in the picture. Plasma's have high hertz rate and LCD TVs typically have much lower. If you were watching football for example you might notice some blur in the players motion on a lower refresh rate TV.

Sometimes the LCD manufacturers claim a higher refresh rate by using software to make the motion look smoother but it doesn't seem to work very well. I've completely turned those options off on mine.

I recently bought a Sony KDL50W705 from John Lewis. Really pleased with it.

 

Not that it's really relevant given your budget.. But, I was in currys te other day and saw the new 4k curved all singing, 65" screens. They were running one with a demo of some wildlife up close. There was a shot of a tortoise walking towards you, my word it was unbelievable! Absolutely staggering picture even right up to it on a 65" screen! Was £3800 though.

It is a staggering TV!!, I really wasnt going to pay that kind of money for a TV that there isnt much 4K content out there for yet, but did buy the 65" Sony Bravia W955 as it was reduced! and it'll be here tomorrow ; )

 

That 4k is very good for the money but it's too small.

The higher the Motion rate the better, but checkout the details as i bought one i think it was 200htz but in the reviews someone pointed out in the manual it said it was something like 150htz.

just bought the sony 55" 3d 4k Bravia yesterday from John Lewis, I pick it up tomorrow


started out looking at the samsung, then when I saw the 55" LG 3d/4k the picture looked so much better than the samsung... then when in JL in Sheffield last week I went to look at the equivalent sony.. that I liked over the LG. even when the guy demo'd a bluray/HD disc, it looked better than the 4k demo they were pumping through the LG.
somthing to do with the Triluminos colour technology.

Netflix are doing 4K, and I think some stuff on Youtube is, but no one is broadcasting it via satellite or freeview etc.

Some games can do 4K, so if you fancy doing that on your 65" TV...........

Just for the avoidance of doubt, only a very powerful PC is capable of 'proper' 4k at this time. I realise that this may already be known, but I didn't want people thinking they can plug any old console into a 4k TV and get 4k gaming.

 

Yes, I imagine that when consoles get to 4k, PCs will be at something considerably higher!

 

We held off on getting a 4K until there is more out to benefit from a ultraHD.
Ended up getting a cheap 50inch Panasonic viera from currys,wasn't expecting it to be fantastic for £349 but am quite impressed for this price

Well after a major palaver, I've ordered the LG I put in the original link. Booked the TV online to collect. The only shop that had 1 in stock was Huddersfield (30mile trip) but near where my father in law lives, in Bradford. So we thought we'd kill 2 birds with one stone. Got there and they had sold out they only offered to knocked £15 off for my "inconvenience" so a call to customer service and got 10% off my next perchase. So we also bought a LG soundbar to complement it.
I have say the customer service in store is shocking, and certainly would look elsewhere in the future. I think part of the problem is there isn't any direct competition anymore since the demise of Comet.
