I don't actually own a subaru yet but am after a new age sti (if anyone knows of a cheap ish one any who was just wondering what it was like owning one!? As in price of parts, servicing and general love and care. My better half said I am too old (29) and would look like a chav on my way to a drug deal every time I drove it, so just want some advice really and to obviously prove her wrong, I have always wanted to own one and it's either get a subaru or a FN2 type r although I did drive a corsa vxr ad was quite impressed but then again it is a vauxhall

 

Aim for a 2003-2005 example. Preferably JDM. So long as you service well using recommended oils and filters ect and map your mods then a usually rust-proof Newy STI will be bulletproof.

The Blobs are allegedly more reliable than the Hawks and sexier than the Bug-eyes.

 

Price of parts - OEM is high. Pay Subaru tax at the dealers, on top of VAT. Go to RCM instead of a dealer, then you pay Subaru tax, on top of VAT, then add on RCM tax.

Jesting aside, you will pay more for some OEM parts from some specialists than the dealers, but, OEM Subaru parts aren't the cheapest in the first place.

Servicing, depends where you go.

I know of Bugeyes with rotting rear arches, rusty Blobeyes will start showing up soon.

 

Cheers guys, the picture is intresting to say the least I sort of had a hunch that OEM parts were not going to be the cheapest, but like I said I have always wanted one and it won't be used that much. As for the rusty blob eyes I think I will pass I am looking for one at around the 6k mark and yes it will be high mileage and may have a couple of dings etc but as long as it's had a good owner and servicing I won't mind that much, and I am quite handy with a spanner and know some good mechanics (if needed) just hope the mrs will like it on a test drive as she has to drive it 15 miles a day four times a week to work hehe!

With a sensible exhaust and perhaps de-soilered nobody would bat an eyelid.
To get her onside, instead of going for the normal STI, why not stretch to a Spec D (for discrete)...



The STI is the best car Ive ever had. Comfortable, practical, quick. Cheap to run considering the performance (better than M3 running costs!). But they are thirsty. You probably know it, but its always good to warn you of 220miles around town to £75 V Power (and only V Power!) and maybe 280 on a run...

 

This is what I keep telling her, but I want the sti with the big wing etc just to annoy her really, yes I am a little sadistic. Yes I am not buying it for the fuel consumption as I drive a 1.1 Mitsubishi colt to work and the subaru will be for light journeys and weekend fun!! I suppose the subaru has got a bit of a reputation with "chav" drivers etc but like I told my mrs I am a car enthusiast and if I cared what people thought I would drive a Volvo. I don't suppose anyone knows of any garages near in the wiltshire area that I could test drive one?! Although I wouldn't be looking to buy until January as they still haven't laid the roads down where we live and why only Vpower!? Is it because the fuel burns quicker than normal unleaded and it has to burn quicker?!

The vpower is 99 Ron and regular 95 Ron?

Lol in Japan the feul is 100 Ron, so a proper jdm sti would be expecting 100ron in the feul tank unless it's been mapped for lesser ron feul, v power's the closest feul being 99 Ron, or you can use the regular if measured correctly with octane booster,but that's generally not the done thing unless in emergencies

Haha little do they know!! Cheers for the info buddy, now just need to find one so I can test drive it! Is the power delivery evil?! As in when it's on boost does it instantly throw you in the back of your seat or is it like the 1.8tvag engines and you wouldn't even think it had a turbo as it was that smooth?!

 

Compared to a 1.1 colt it will put a grin from ear to ear, Yea you'll feel the turbo, go for a classic if you want a raw feel, newages are more refined if that's the right word to use

Sorry Steve will do, thought these questions were quite original but guess I was wrong oh and test driving a normal wrx today not the sti I will search for the differences Steve do not panic just kidding I know it can get annoying is noobs getting all excited about starting a new thread and thinking "sod it" to the search button and for that I am deeply apologetic, I don't mind looking like a drug dealer it may give me that "street cred!?!?" Which I never had...........I am not the coolest cat in town unfortunately and it will annoy the mrs so win win all round. Am very excited about test driving though never driving an AWD Before

 

lol, I'm 29 and my misses is one of those girly girls and she doesn't mind it once I got it in fact drove it herself a few times now although scared to get in with me driving now think i have done one too many "boosts" with her lol

Have fun today on your test drive and if you do buy the WRX please make sure you pick up an STI spoiler well unless you prefer the little one

 

Normal wrx are a bit ,, ummm ,, unexciting tbh - if its got two lil pea shooter exhausts out the back its prob unmapped and standard

Look to drive a ppp wrx for a good starting point

 

Yeah my mrs isn't really the girly girl type but she will be the one driving it most although we wont even cover 100 miles a week maybe 60-80 if that, and our idea of a crazy night is having a glass of wine whilst watching spongebob with our 17 month old so I need some sort of silliness in my life (at least on the weekends anyway) the subaru I am test driving is a 2.0t wrx it has a pro drive exhaust (I know this as it says pro drive on it) and a massive wing but won't be buying it as I want a sti!! And can't till January, unless someone hits me with the sensible stick and I end up buying a FN2 hope not, as I am addicted to the sound and fireworks of anti-lag lol

Right so just got back from the test drive and it was ok but that's the problem it was just ok, it was quite fast not great then again it was only a standard wrx impreza so hopefully the sti will be a bit more of an animal, but overall the ride was comfortable and it was really easy to drive the clutch and gear changes were spot on and I was smiling all the way through, so roll on when they get an sti in so I can have a play with that

 

A standard car will always just be ok, you need one with a little work done to it

Where abouts are you? Maybe someone close by

 

I am in wootton Bassett would love it if someone on here did live close by so I could possibly cheek a ride and see the difference, might have to get myself along to a local meet if there is such a thing?! Think I have missed all the castle Combe track days as well this year..........boo

 

My missis's Mini Cooper is more fun than a standard wrx....go to the corner of the room and slap yourself.
