buying a STI what should i look out for
Hi guys. I'm new to the fourm. I'm seriously looking to buy a stock STI I have a couple in mind they are 2002 and 2003. Is there any thing in particular I should be looking out for. Any info welcome.
check for oil leaks at the drivers side as the hot turbo perishes the rocker cover gasket at that side, put the heaters on and have a drive and you might smell it once up to temp. rear shocks listen for knocking as the grease dries out in them. engine knocking noise or rattle when accelerating or revving the engine. suspension bushes and steering rack clunking or noises. rear arches for rust. they are getting on a bit now so give it a good look over. check for all the usual serviceable items pads etc. a service record with regular oil changes is desireable also check for smoke on startup and when turbo is on boost. check for crunching and notchiness on the gearbox as well. an enthusiast owned car would be a good buy.
And have a look here too:

Remember they're getting on now, and they really do like to rust if they've never been properly protected. Look hard!

They need octane booster, or a remap.
Dodgy fuel is a cause of engine failure in these cars - especially jap imported ones.
Rust on an early car is much more difficult to put right than mechanical issues. Check everywhere for it, rear part of rear arches (where they join the bumper) front crossmember (under radiator and difficult to see) and under the boot spoiler on boot lid are common places to rust. Check panel gaps are even, uneven gaps can be a sign of poorly repaired accident damage.
