Hi
I don't know whether anyone will be able to help but here goes:
My father has a 1953 french car, the question is, the original back lights were all in one lamp, ie, side, brake and indicators all in a red lense, dad has separated them so that it now has orange indicators but the brake lights are on the same wire. I repeat, the same wire. Now then, if we change the lense on that one so that it is red, is it legal to have red flashers on a car of that vintage, especially when it had them from new?
A lot to take in I know, but what d'ya reckon?

Had the same problem with an American Mustang, that passed Fine.

I'll have a word with the guy who MOT'd it , ask him what the regulations are, I'm pretty sure it's fine at that age, and especially if it came from the factory like that.

Ron,

It is legal for cars of that age to have red indicators. In fact, I don't think a car of that age even has to have indicators.

In my experience, most MOT testers and even Traffic Cops often don't know the ins and outs of these type of laws either.

Ta,

Matt

MOT testers vary wildly in their knowledge - one told me that a Moggy Minor I was borrowing would fail because "it had no wing mirrors".

It ain't had 'em for 35 years.... D'oh.

Nick.

The MOT book says -

Page 5, Section 1.3, Stop Lights.

Note : On vehicles first used before 1 September 1965, it is acceptable for a direction indicator lamp to be incorporated with a stop lamp.

can vouch for chiarks story, had the same happen with a 1969 mini, if you ever get a fail for something that seems a bit dodgy to you, ask to see the relevant section in the book. The look on the face of the tester is worth it when they are wrong.
