RIP to my WRX :(
My £70 includes weekend running too, just did the sums and I'm averaging 28.5 mpg. Not bad I reckon.
Hi bud, called in yesterday to the garage. Cylinder 1 is 0psi, cylinder 2 is 70psi , 3 & 4 are 100psi.
He's not 100% sure whether a repair or replacement is the best option until he whips the engine out on the 6th of Jan. he seems to think it could be worse than first thought, (damaged bore? i think he said) so he will start looking for a quality engine. Might not be, he said it sounds like it with the massive oil consumption of late.

As for the mechanic, it doesn't sound like he is too clued up on Imprezas. Don't forget that to strip a flat 4 engine takes over twice as long as a conventional engine due to the crank being the last piece you get to. (block needs to be split) So I would get a quote just for the strip down before you let him go any further. 10 hrs labour is not uncommon for a strip down.
Depends how much you want/can afford to spend. A decent rebuild with. New crank (which you will need) is going to be £2k minimum. A used engine from a good source is usually around £400-£500 plus fitting.

you have some options...
1. sell the car as it is
2. break it for parts
3. spend some money, get the engine fixed (by someone who knows what's wrong and knows how to fix it) having it upraded, could cost £2-3k ish.
All comes down to money.. what you want from the car.. how long you intend to keep it. If the rest of the car is sound.. you might want to get a 0% credit card for two years and pay it that way
don't buy 2nd hand engine unless you know who's selling it.. where it's from etc.. you could be going from the frying pan into the fire.
ring a few specialist..
