For the wintel machine to keep up you would have to spend a day reinstalling the OS

All Macs have intel CPU's now don't they?

My issue with Apple isn't the quality of the products - although their paper specs aren't impressive - it is the way you are locked into their 'walled garden'. You have a MacBook, next thing you know you have an Apple TV and an Iphone, all your music and video is locked on itunes and to keep using it you have to keep buying expensive apple hardware. This is their business model basically. You can either become brainwashed like Jack or seek a better way.

For me that is linux/android, etc., open source stuff basically.

Yes, wintel is short for windows/intel (encompasses AMD too)

I hate walled gardens, they never win in the end

There's no walled garden on OSX. Install what you want from where you want, even Windows if you want a reminder of the drudgery.

That isn't what I said or meant per se, I meant with Apple in general. Yes you can avoid being locked into itunes but most people are seduced by Apples seamless integration. Next thing they know, they HAVE to buy Apple stuff to keep all their purchased movies or music. It's a big con. You can buy hardware for all your needs at half the price, and run linux based OS's and open source media players, etc., Android on your phone blah blah.

I dual booted my MBP i7 with Win7 and it ran perfectly. I sold it after a month as I decided for the money I spent on it (got it in a sale) I could recoup my money easily and buy something cheaper as there were other 'toys' I wanted more.

I still want another MBP but will wait for the Haswell models release hopefully in September and see what changes they make to them. I want retina screen however I also want 16gb ram which you can't upgrade to as the retina models are all soldered onto the board. They really need to stop doing that.

As others have said. If you must have one now, try the apple refurb section of their online store. The only other discount would be if you are a student

If you ca wait alleged updates in late sep to late october

That is poop, unless the upgrade to full capacity is reasonable which I know it's not. I like to buy with the least memory, then slowly upgrade, it's like having a new machine every couple of years.

I am the same with my phone, it's great to get a 24gb model and later whack in a 64gb Micro SD card

I have recently bought a top of the range 15" Retina MBP.

If you are going on holiday to southern spain, then pop over to Gibraltar. In Irish town (away from the main tourist drag and shops) there is an official apple reseller who are obviously a lot cheaper than paying Apple UK prices. You'll also get a UK VAT receipt in pounds sterling, but with one caveat. The VAT rate is zero which may cause problems if you want to use it to offset against a business on the mainland.

Have a look at the prices, some things are substantially cheaper. The 15" non retina quad core i7 with 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD is £1329 and the top end Retina with 16GB Ram and 512GB SSD is £1999. However these prices are negotiable, and you'll get an additional discount for paying by debit card. The kit is brand new, and I have registered it with apple with no problem.

Macrumors had a story about speed results appearing on some benchmarking site from some new laptop hardware, so a refresh does seem to be coming
