I think the fact that it stipulates 98 ron on the fuel flap is to maintain performance advantages, not to prevent the engine going pop.
There are more serious reasons for the failures and I don't think it's down to using lower octane fuel.

If the cars couldn't be run on normal fuel they wouldn't be able to sell the cars in the UK, because the 98 ron stuff isn't available in more places across the UK than you think.

Low octane fuel may accelerate the demise of the EJ257, but it is not the only cause. They also fail in the hands of those who continuously monitor knock, AFR, use the best fuel, warm up based on oil temperatures, cool down and maintain properly.
i think the point is that the 2.5 is a weak engine, this is well documented on here and in other places.

What i'm getting at is, they say 98 ron only in order that the claimed performance figures can be chased in real world conditions.
We all realise that manufacturers figures are fantasy, but they would be more so if lower octane fuel was used.

Well then i am happy to hold my hand up and say i was wrong but producing a car that requires 98 ron fuel for this part of the uk that can only get 97 ron is ridiculous.
Subaru have lost the plot no wonder so many have went bang.
I remember back in the late 90s all the jap imports were coming into ireland using 100 ron in japan and then people here were running then on ordinary unleaded 95 ron and they were all going bang

These cars are not UK car specifically, they are Euro cars and many parts of Europe cannot get anything > 95ron
