The ending is heart breaking when you know how much hard work went in to it and how close they were to succeeding.

In what way were they "stuffy"?

They were saying that because there was no official record of the spitfires being disposed of and therefore they could not exist, which goes against Cundall's research and eye witness accounts.
Where's their sense of adventure? (hence stuffy or boring)
It's not often that archaeologists get a chance like this so why won't they continue with the search?.
Cundall has spent many years researching before this dig and I am sure that he is not doing it on a whim.

Those Spitfires, where did that happen? Was it Duxford? What an experience, should have been there! Twelve of them? 12 x 12 is, what, 144? What a beautiful sound.
In the mid sixties at my parents house outside Hastings I was mowing the lawn one day and heard something over the 'orrible two smoker, looked up and found myself in the sights of an Me109 which in turn, and not far behind it, was in the sights of a Spit. They were filming Battle of Britain! All that week there were Spits, Hurricanes, Mes and FWs (I believe the then Spanish Airforce loaned a lot of German aircraft which they were still using!) stooging around. THAT was an experience too. There's nothing quite like a big V12 on full song.....

 

Yes that was at Duxford.
What a tremendous sound and sight that must have been.

I was a bit disappointed with the ME109 in the film because they were Spanish Hispano HA-1112-M1L, therefore had the Rolls-Royce Merlin instead of the original Daimler Benz engine.

 

Yes i see. Well Cundall has done so much work on the possibility that as you say he wont be doing all that on a whim. I sincerely wish him every success.

How old were you? Must have been amazing!!

 

Finally got round to watching this today, what a complete tragedy.

 

Ha ha Joz, I'd just grown out of nappies....
A few years back I was doing some fieldwork, was suddenly aware of an incredible noise, thought the tractor was having a Big Internal Event... what looked like an Me109 overtook me VERY low and rapidly disappeared over the hill. That livened up my day somewhat. (Turns out there's a guy who lives over the valley who flies and restores old aircraft and specialises in WW2 stuff)

 

Wow just watched that – thanks for posting. Have nothing but admiration for those guys – unbelievable what such a small group could achieve in such conditions. Some seriously skilled individuals. Shame about the end result – that must have been gutting. Someones comment said why did you just take her apart and crate it back to the US? No idea on the logistics myself but surely if it was that easy the Air Force would have done that years ago.

So sad that about the engineer Rick but at least it was off the back of doing something he loved. Did you notice earlier on when they were eating inside one of his fingers was missing?

Surprised they didn’t cover it up for the winter to give it some protection.

 

The B29 was a good aircraft with quite a history. I was very sorry to see what happened when they were so near to success. Thank goodnees it did not happen when they were airborne.

I will wait to hear Mr Cundall's report before I give up hope.
