Pre Built Or Self Build PC?
Its looking like ivb are not going to be a massive leap anyway. Pci3.0 is the main plus point imho. 22nm tech is just to save power imho for the mobile chips. There is talk on other forums that i5k is still the cpu for clocking.
If I needed a dedicated PC then I'd build it myself.
I've done it before for friends and family, and also built the servers my previous company used, plus a few pc's for a couple of clients we did some consulting for. It's not as daunting as it seems, plus I do like tinkering and being able to specify exactly the components you want is always nice.

The reason I went for the barebones system is that I could add my own components and end up with a better system than you can buy off the shelf at PC World etc, the fun comes in altering the BIOS settings to maximise the performance whilst maintaining reliability.
5 gig seems to be the sweet spot for the sb i5k on water - and about 4.5 on air as you say. Some people push a tad more but dont see much gains in the real world. The FSX boys are the ones who are really hoping the ivb will clock beyond 5gigs as they need the CPU power not the GFX power. I have been watching the FSX forums and they are desperatly hoping they can run full settings with ivb and 680 / 690 gtx. I dont think its quite there yet myself though and will require a good couple of years yet before a stock CPU will be able to run FSX on max.

Well the PC is up and running, just carrying out the gazillion Windows 7 updates
, but apart from that all is going well.
With the basic overclocking functions in the bios I have managed a Windows 7 rating of 7.8 so far and that was with the CPU overclocked to 4.2Mhz and there should be a lot more to come with some further OC'ing and tweaking.

Thanks, it surprises me that the performance index hasn't been updated since the release of Windows 7 as surely now it must be a little out of date.
