Don't forget the little 'flick away' flourish as you reach the end of the panel...

(Says John, who hasn't spray-painted ever )

Daz, it would be easier and better in every way to paint all the panels individually and off the car.

So:

1- Paint whats left of the shell, ie, the rear quarters along with the door shuts and boot aperture.

2 - Paint boot lid, doors and wings either individually or all together, but definately off the car.

It may take you longer, but you will have none of the overlapping application to deal with ( less chance of runs) and you are able to get everywhere on the panels and ensure gloss on every inch of the car.

Personally I wouldn't bother with warming the paint up.

This is an old trick that painters of synthetic paints use.

It does make application easier without the need for thinners, but it can also cause you, the inexperienced sprayer, ( no offence of course ) more problems as the paint cools down and alters the viscosity.

It's nearly summer-ish, and ambients are within a couple of degrees of normal spraying temperature anyway, so just the same as using a professional booth.

Cheers Neil, that's pretty much how I was going to tackle it anyway.

Doors off boot off and bumpers and paint the lot separately. I was also going to do one side of the shell at a time as I'm only using a small compressor. I'm happy so far so want to have a go at the rest.

Not a major update but I finished the rear arches on the shell tonight.

They were welded and needed sealing and painting. First off I used some Zinc primer to cover the bare metal. I then went over the welds with a 2k sealer and this was allowed to set for 24hrs. Then some gravitex was applied and again left to cure for 24hrs. Finally a couple of coats of 2k paint the same colour as underneath the arches. There should then be a clean edge between the blue top coat and the white of the arches that will just be under the arch extentions.

It's as tidy as Im going to be able to get it but Im happy with it.

I've finally managed to get some paint on the exterior of the car. I thought I'd cracked this spraying malarky but I'v managed to get two runs. I think I was too eagre.
I'll flatten them off tomorrow but other than those two niggles its all good.

Once again, the pictures are of the paint staight out of the gun.

What paint have you used Daz? Rebuilding a type 1 aircooled beetle and mk1 mini, gonna be spraying them myself in my crappy garage. Looks like a good job you have done for a home spray job. Be perfect after a flat.

Just a normal 2k paint bought from local autopaint supplier.

I've just given the front wing a final flat and polish and I'm delighted with the finish. Let's hope the rest of the car turns out as well

Here's a couple of pics.

After having to paint the drivers side a couple of times due to a couple of runs I have finally finished the painting the shell.

The car has had a general flat and buff but over the next week I shall be doing the following:

Machine Flat with 1000 disc,
Wet flat with 1200
wet flat with 2000
Machine polish with Faraclay G3 and a coupound pad
Machine polish with Cresta Ultra light cutting creme
and finally a machine Polish with Meguiar's Machine Glaze.
it'll will then be left for a few weeks when it will get a coat of wax after all the other bits and pieces are paited and put back on the car.

Should keep me busy.

Here's the drivers side just after paint the one of the rear quarter is after the initial light flat.
