Do we have any reports from mappers/tuners or Subaru specialist technicians as to the quality/reliability of the SSQV copies? I know several years ago it used to be absolutely pointless buying any replicas of anything from China, Taiwan or Hong Kong, but in recent times those crafty buggers have got exceedingly good at making near identical copies that in a lot of cases perform just as well!
Would be good if someone knowledgeable or with a lot of experience whose tried one could report back on the build quality and functionality of one. For instance a friend of mine has fitted what I'm pretty sure is a replica HKS on his 1996 STI, the car runs and pulls fine with it, boosts and dumps as it should with no issues whatsoever. However I wouldn't consider myself enough of a scooby expert to reccommend them to anyone purely based on the one example!

When Rich from FB tuning spotted the fake one under the bonnet of my mate's car he said to me "I bet that drives like a piece of crap" and he was right! Serious lag after every gear change, Rich replaced it with a standard re-circ dump valve and with no other changes to the car the serious lag had gone.
This thing was so bad that whilst lightly revving the engine it was dumping air, I can't call it boost because it wasn't producing any positive boost!!! After each gear change there was what felt like a second of lag before the car built up the boost again and you were off.

Undoubtedly, some of the fakes out there will be better quality; but how do you know you're buying a 'good' fake?

I never said all fake BOVs were bad. Some are pretty bloody good for the money. But you should be aware when you've bought a fake thinking it was real, or hopefully avoid the situation completely.
Someone should start a list of known 'good' fakes. Oh, wait, they all look the same, lol

Just a quick update, I bought one of the knock off copies for about £30 or thereabouts and took it apart before fitting it. All the machining and parts inside look to be decent quality, not as good as HKS granted but there was nothing that looked like it would break or cause any damage. Has been fitted on the car for 6 months now with no problems, so if you've bought a car with one on it doesn't mean you have to throw it in the bin!
At the end of the day dump valves are just little toys we stick on our cars to make a nice noise, they have no performance benefit so it can be worth saving some money on. They're also so simple inside it's not a hard job for the rip off masters in Taiwan to copy them exactly. However for other engine parts where safety or damage is a lot more likely I'd stick to the real deal.
Though my cheap Ebay silicone boost and coolant hoses are going strong too so what do I know!

...if I suffered the afflictions that make one want to have an VTA BOV, would rather buy a fake/lookalike for £40 than the overpriced 'real' one. Yes a fool and his money are easily parted and anyone who pays £260 for a little bit of "tish" noise is a nutter when you can get the exact same noise for £40 ???

I know this is a crazy-old thread, but I just felt the need to thank the OP. I deal in JDM parts for a living, so knowing that I'm only making authentic parts available for sale is high on my priority list. I obtained an SQV4 today and, although this thread seems to be only about the III, it's helped me feel confident that the IV I have is authentic. I wish more sites would have more members put out the same info on a more regular basis (I know...lot's of 'mores').
Anyway, thank you OP for your info!
