each sound good imo
and as said out of the box older subarus, you can even hear the burble, not until you put a wider system with less mufflers as the yanks would say lol
but im oldfashioned and love the burble from a good system on the unequal manifolds set up

IMO une-equal length every time! Its the iconic sound I loved growing up watching McRae and Richard Burns.
I tried equal length and now i'm back on un-equal . But hey ho each to their own!

I like both I have a WRX bugeye with unequal headers and a Howard & Scott exhaust and sounds gorgeous in the morning when I start her up !!
My mate has a Type 20 with equal headers and although no burble still sounds nice and then has the power advantage of equal headers!! as well as being a Litchfield Type 20!!

Are you sure Tony? This vid has both Colin Mcrae in his title winning car which sounds very un-equal and Rich Burns in the later Impreza which sonds very equal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kpb_k...eature=related

I had a 300bhp bug WRX with Prodrive bb, but with deresonated centre and sports cat which livened things up nicely. Sounded great.
I now have a 2006 Litchfield Type 20 (Spec C) with 360bhp. The Litchfields have a Milltek exhaust. In fact it does have a light burble at idle although this goes as you drive off. At low revs around town it's a tad noisy ( but racy! ) and no burble, so the WRX has the edge soundwise when pootling about at 30mph (note the Spec C is a vastly superior car of course). However, when you decide to give it some, it's the Spec C that has the edge - it sounds like a screaming MiMi!

GT Spec Gen 2, you get the best of both.
Slight beat off idle and then the equal scream up top.

The UK Hawks are 2.5s, so to compare only the headers on an equal footing, you'd have to compare the 2.0 blob STi with blob JDM Sti of similar vintage. Don't think the UK has any low down torque advantage.

You CAN NOT beat the unique muffled tone of the early impreza wrc cars, especially on a foggy Friday night deep in keilder forest, better than any pub on earth I recon...
In theory, could you fabricate an unequal length manifold for a 4-in-line engine and get a similar burble?

sorry I know this thread is old, but...
Yes you can. Old Saab 900 turbos had unequal headers. A 3" catless turbo-back system releases a lovely burble. Not quite as nice as the Scooby burble but close.

Equal length all the way, why have unequal length performance loosing headers? What a waste of time, its an old design and holds cars back, all for a bit of noise which makes everyone that hears you coming think "another idiot in a subaru"
All the unequal length headers look exactly the same, times have moved on and so does tuning!

Me too, when I "nip" down the road that by-passes our village quite a few have thought it was a bike when they've been sitting outside the local pub (which you can't see from the road). Andy

Unequal sound best. It is the classic sound.
However equal can sound pretty good too at the top end.
Equal make for better power - So higher end cars always have to end up going the equal length route. There is a point at when the unequal become a weak part in the set up.
GT spec 2 are the best compromise. As they are for big power cars and have an equal length feel to the sound most of the time. But you can get a bit of an unequal burble low down

Having driven subarus of many different power types with many different types of headers....

Putting something on there for a sound is completely pointless in my eyes.

I would beg to differ, GT spec 2, rcm, japspeed, etc etc etc etc are all the same and unchanged in many years. They are made from poor materials, and hold even lower powered cars back, you can unlock far more from your engine and turbo with equal length. You dont need a high power car to benefit from equal length headers

Agree..but my point was at at certain level unequal really become massively restrictive.
``Putting something on there for a sound is completely pointless in my eyes.``
I agree to disagree on that
As part of the driving experience for many is not just about raw performance but about stimulation of the senses and sound plays a big part in that
