Richmond, Wimbledon, Roehampton, Dulwich, Barnes, Ham, Old Town Clapham - just off the top of my head. Much of Wandsworth has tree-lined roads and every bit as nice as anywhere in north London, and as expensive.
North Londoners just have a thing about south London - a fear of no tube probably. I lived in north London for years and had the same feeling for S London; but they're both dumps if taken as a whole. Full of people that weren't born in the UK, dirty, traffic clogged and depressing.
North of the river has the tube and (generally) better roads, but that's about it. I don't live in S London, BTW....... I just work there now and see there's little difference from the other side of the river.

iwas born in lewisham..yes it is a poor area..but so its 90% of london. your snobby attitude doesnt help.
oh you missed east sheen, ealing, wandsworth, wimbledon...are they all honourary north london too...?
i suppose tottenham has had its boundaries moved?
back to the OP...
personally i wouldnt bother living in london mate..its too pricey and your standard of living will be found wanting.
ask pretty much anyone who's left londond and theyd never return..unless theyre from chelsea of course with a silver spoon hanging out of their 'arris.

London's just a typical city in that most of it could be described as crap, other than the 20% that is either exclusive or 'nice'. Lewisham has Blackheath, but the rest of it isn't classed as nice. Totttenham is in the same borough as Highgate - does than make Highgate a dump, or maybe Crouch End?
Personally, I'd avoid East london, but there are still decent areas in that large area; though less than the rest.....

I have been to London on numerous occasions and have always left with relief and dismay.
I cannot think of any area that i have visited thats even worth living in.Horrible, congested, dirty and scruffy are a few words that spring to mind.
To the OP,there are plenty of airports around the UK please consider elsewhere.

If your going to work at london city airport your closest options are,
Custom House, Beckton, Canning Town, Silvertown or North Woolwich and i was brought up in Canning Town and i cant stress enough how much of a ****hole the entire Borough of Newham is.. I hate it to sound racist as i have no problems with any colours but in all the above the working white person is the major minority,(im honestly sorry if that offends)
You could go further out as in Ilford, Chigwell, Barking, Dagenham or Romford at a push but Ilford is like living in India, Chigwell is chavtastic and Romford isnt too bad seen some lovely girls out and about in Romford but getting to LCA could be a bit of a pain Barking and Dagenham are just bad bad bad..
When i was living in London there was a place in Silvertown called Britannia Village.. It was a brand new development and it attracted all the young lot who worked on the Isle of Dogs so that might be a consideration as its about 25 min walk to the airport/10 mins on bike.
If i had to move closer to London now the closest i would go would be Canvey Island/Benfleet in Essex and commute in.
If you need any more info on the area give me a pm as i spent the first 25 years of my life living in all the above places so know the ins and outs of them pretty well.

Ealing is West London
If the OP is thinking of living in East London or Docklands, here's a handy internet fact:
DHL have resumed deliveries to Baghdad, but there are still places in East London they refuse to deliver to

ok -- let me clarify for the idiots out there
the term north and south is in relation to the River Thames -- hence my comment about Putney and Richmond -- both south of the river thames being honorary north (of the Thames) London
the bottom line is everyone born north of the Thames -- thinks that south of the Thames is a sh1thole populated by losers
get over it
(and it has noticably sh1ttier weather too)

City Airport is a good 40 mins commute from Brixton in rush hour anyway.
Someone's already said it, Greenwich is the one you want if you can afford it. Nice area and handy for work. Plumbstead/Woolwich isn't too bad but not recommended.

I lived in Ealing for a while, was a really nice place but allegedly taken over by Eastern Euros now who make English people unwelcome.
Know all around that Putney, Wimbledon, Clapham area, Wandsworth too. Some good places to live around there.

all the aforementioned south london boroughs/districts have zero to offer
wandsworth may have some half decent streets -- but that's about it, all imo (and every other north londoner for that matter)
Tooting? -- what a complete joke

Hi, post 45 made a lot of good sense, the only way to get to City airport is by the DLR, ( car park £75.00 per day at LC airport ), find somewhere fairly local,
bear in mind next year the Olympics are in the Stratford area and already the media are suggesting that the whole transport system for the area will not cope, so any area served by Stratford station might be best avoided, spend some time with the tube network map,

Might not be possible but have you looked at how much it would cost to fly into the airport each day? Is there some sort of season ticket available with airlines?
Again, you have give us no idea what type of job it is, if your working in Burger King within the airport you will likely need a council flat in some horrible slum. However if its a decent job with salary to match then people will have a better idea of what to suggest
