Woman charged after complaint over golliwog - Update
I wondered that myself, as you do get multi racial dolls in other forms
however, what constitutes as offensive ranges from the objective to the subjective. just because you find something inoffensive, does that nullify the feelings of someone else ?
i would have taken the doll out of view and apologised. life's too short and i don't have the spare time to go to court to defend my principles.

TX.
what on earth is offensive about it anyway, it's just a doll ffs. How is that only "black" people take offence to stuff like this ... when was the last time you heard of a "white" person being offended by something similar. Just playing the race card imho. Crazy world

To be honest in the current climate, putting a Golliwog in your window is stupid, it wasnt a mistake, it was designed to offend, the neighbours should have just ignored it as its just a bit tragic.
Are we all really that stupid on this forum to think that this was not a deliberate attempt to offend the "black" neighbours with whom they have a" history of difficulties".
Now i have no problems with golliwog dolls, but the black and white minstrel type depiction of black people was shall we just for the purpose of discussion settle for the term "less than flattering" and did nothing for black people other than make them appear stupid.
And while i have no time for pc bull crap i can see how the neighbours might take offence and want to teach them a lesson for trying to be smart *****.
Oh and i don't care what people call me i'm old school and i can usually throw insults and or punches with the best of them.
Names are just words and i have no problem calling a spade a spade, wog or nig nog as jim davidson and many other very funny comics of that time used to, and me and my father ( who was black fyi) used to cry with laughter at this stuff, and we never missed an episode of love thy neighbour or rising damp.

It was a musical depiction of singers made up as blacks and also whites playing musical instrumemts and singing. They did this very well and were highly entertaining. It was a very popular show at the time enjoying very high ratings. They were the George Mitchell Singers.
There were of course the embryo PC Plonkers at the time who tried to make a fuss about it but popular demand supported the show which continued for a long time. An attempt at reproducing the show without blacked up characters failed and it came back in its original form.
There was no possible way in which it made black people look in anyway stupid as you say.
Les
Les is right, it was just a music and dancing show and did not depict black people as stupid in any way. Just good old fashioned entertainment.

We are all entitled to our opinions, and i have long since given up trying to enlighten people on the finer nuances of subtle subconcious (sp) racism.
I won't preach to the deaf or attempt to shine light into the eyes of a blind man.

I was expecting you to enlighten us about the way in which the Black and White Minstrel Show was offensive and/or demeaning to black people.
Les
This sums up the issue of causing offense nicely IMO.

Normally I find Stephen Fry fairly 'offensive' but his summing up really does, "sum it up". 'So feckin' what?!' Says all that has to be said.
I mean, WTF are you talking about
"Subtle subconcious racism" ...
Take a look at ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subconscious ...
What it's saying is that the word 'subconcious' is a little 'airy fairy'. Like the whole racism/sexism/whatever'ism-of-the-day PC claptrap we get fed, which has the sole purpose of DIVIDING people!

The term subconscious is used in many different contexts and has no single or precise definition. This greatly limits its significance as a definition-bearing concept, and in consequence the word tends to be avoided in academic and scientific settings.

Update (from The Independent):
A woman charged with racially aggravated harassment after displaying a golliwog in her window has denied the offence.
Jena Mason, 65, of College Lane, Worlingham, Suffolk, was arrested after her black neighbour Rosemarie O'Donnell complained about the doll to police.
At Lowestoft magistrates today she pleaded not guilty and her case was adjourned for a case management hearing on October 11.
Mason arrived at court flanked by her husband and two other men who attempted to block photographers at the entrance.
Appearing in the court's secure dock and wearing a cream suit, she spoke to confirm her name and address and enter a plea.
The row erupted after her neighbour complained about the doll on display at her manor home in the village.
Outside court, Howard Marjoram, 66, a BNP member from Lowestoft, said the party would be lending her support at future hearings.
He said: "To have all this fuss over a golliwog is a travesty and I am here to see justice done."
Mason was released on unconditional bail and did not speak as she left court.

Racial harassment charges against a woman who displayed a golliwog in her window have been dropped.

Which planet do you actually live on, Leslie? I only ask because it's obvious that no aspect of reality seems to intrude upon it.
Racism should be well in the past mate..... People need to get over it and smile. Its a DOLL..
Whats racist about a white person having a black doll though, if that's the case it would also be racist for a black person to have a white doll, far too many people pulling the racist card over silly little trivial things, where does it all end?
