Mmmm posts seems to have gone a bit off topic as per, anyways. Really liking the vrs, drove one the other night and loved it. Serious compromise to Subaru though but still a top wee car. I had a look at the Seats, ta for tip on these. lovely looking beasts and your right same engine. Mind you that VAG 1.9 tdi is in so many cars. But where i looked they were a bit more pricey than the Skoda.

Now what to do with the current car?. Id like some advice on what to sell it for. But i dont want to get the smack down for asking(like im trying to sell without paying for ad). Can i do this in here somewhere?. I also have this horrible sick feeling in my guts thinking of letting it go. It's like dumping that stupid lass that was a **** bag, then when your alone with the **** you feel low oh so very low. : /

Not the fastest but a very underated car. The misses as a 10 plate SZ3 petrol and it's averaged 45 MPG on a mixed Motorway and A road commute over 13000 miles. Excellent drive and well specced.

or a Sport. I know it's not diesel but it's still a Swift.

Thanks for ideas man. The ddis really is too slow, but ticks boxes in mpg for sure. I do like the Swift sport. But they are a bit out of what i want to spend(5k) and dont hit the higher mpg figures. I think you will be lucky to see 40mpg. Nice wee cars though. I used to have an old swift gti, it was hella fun. I was mad to sell it.

My dad has owned 2 Fabia VRS's and I cant think of anything else that offers the performance, economy and reliability. They really are good fun to drive and the thing returns 50+ MPG everywhere. They also seem to hold their money pretty well, his local skoda dealer was saying they can get enough of them.

 

I can't read the whole thread, so will just add my tuppence - a friend traded his impreza in for a Fabia vRs - of course I ribbed him for getting a diesel Skoda!!!

Anyway, he had it mapped and I had a test drive one day, it was very quick, but understandably suffered badly with understeer, especially in the wet with a heavy right foot!

Not long after he got it, I took the other route, and got a £750 Seat Ibiza TDi off ebay. Does 50mpg +, can't get it below 48mpg even when ragging it (well, sometimes I can). And I still get the fun of the scoob when I want it.

You have to be disciplined to go the two car route, same friend with the vRs, previously went the two car route, one an old cavalier, two a TVR, I fully understand why he took the TVR everywhere, but ultimately it had to go!!

Cheers for the feedback mate. Im still looking for one but getting side tracked looking at warm hatches due to the Fabias being a bit expensive and high milage. Even checked out a Fiesta St, was actually pretty taken with it. But cant go back to Ford ever!

I see your Seat is giving your grief now, isnt that just typical. The car gods must be unhappy. The week i deceided to sell my Scoob i got major problems with it,now its costing me to fix it before i can sell. goddamit!

 

If you can find a Fab that's spent plenty of time on the motorway then i'd go for it. The Wife's is at 144k and feels tighter than similar cars with less than half the milage. We were lookng at getting a newer/lower milage one but her current one is quite simply tighter

 

It is causing a little grief now but, in the 2.5 years I've had it, it's covered 26k miles which has saved me c£3.5k (I keep a spreadsheet ) in fuel costs alone. That has more than covered the cost of the car, insuring it, taxing it, MOT'ing, repairing, new tyres etc. I still have the car too! If anything big went wrong I'd just scrap it!

When you factor in servicing and tyre savings that I've made for not having to run the scoob so much, that increases the savings too.

I don't think I could bring myself to sell the Scoob - I don't want to face up to the depreciation, and figure that spending a few k on something that I would accept as a replacement, that would end up depreciating too, I may as well just spend that money on fuel for the scoob!

I sold my scooby about a month ago due to the running costs being ridiculous for me and i was struggling. I considered a Fabia vrs but after a lot of looking about i found a seat ibiza fr for less money with less miles and easier to insure. A quick test drive in one and i quite enjoyed it. Im managing about 53mpg reguarly and the build quality is fantastic, never really looked at seats before but im very impressed...also swore i wouldnt own a derv but after driving about in one, im afraid to say im enjoying it

Do miss the subaru a lot though!

I have pretty much left this forum as no Scooby for me anymore, but thought id nip in and answer you.

In the end i bought a Suzuki Ignis Sport. cost me £1600 53 plate 43k on her. Obviously big power loss. But its a fantastic wee car, proper old school hot hatch vibe. Handles amazing super sharp. All on standard set up. It has a 1.5 dohc vvt engine and is like a Honda vtec sysytem. Its a smooth torquey delivery not the hard bang you get with the dohc Hondas.
Its not far off the pace of m old dohc Honda though not as rapid as that.
I get 37-41 mpg so far blasting b roads. So im very very happy with it. I would never diss the Scoob ever. It gave me 7 years of fun and was the best car i ever had. Bottom line is im not rich enough to run one anymore. For the power you get, safety,driving thrills for the cash you cant beat a Scoob. But running it was killing me. So sad.

I'm still trying to decide. The Focus ST was tempting but too much money and too thirsty. Golf GT TDi - high milers still fetch alot, and I don't think they're that reliable.

My problem is I just can't go with something standard...

 

I hear you on the standard tip. Its hard to go back. With my car i can accept it as is and i knew that. There was no point trying to save money if i went out bought a car then spent a few k making it "better".
So i knew it would achieve so little messing with this car and more likely upset the nice setup it has, im just leaving it. Turbo cars its a must including diesels.
Its hard to know what to do, it took me around 6 months to decide on my car and a good bit longer finding one. Diesel was the obvious choice but **** to spending big money on a star ship cruiser no matter what milage they can do on those engines. Everything else will wear out, i think people tend to miss that.
A Focus St is a passion car not a sensible one, but top marks there for the choice love them!. Golfs i looked at them but they are so over priced. The Fabia VRS is getting like that now, a few years back people slept on it, but now they are very popular and the secret is out so prices are high.
I was recommended the Daihatsu Sirion rally here and i tried to get on. But living up in Jocko land i had lots of traveling for a rare car and gave up. But if you can find a nice one they rock very fast quicker than my Ignis and cheap to buy. There is lots of NA engined Jap goodness for cheap you could prob buy something like i got and keep the Scoob for fun times.

 

I know how you feel, I sold my RB5 last October as I putting over £50 of V-Power a week in just commuting.
I bought a low mileage 306 HDi 3 door which has been great so far, 600 miles to a tank.

I do fancy one of the run-out model limited edition Blue Fabia VRS next, or a Renaultsport Megane DCi.

Two years ago I never thought I would own a diesel, shame economics make it the only choice really.

 

I had a Pug for quite a while - great car, handled an absolute treat, no slouch either

In Feb i was in a similar situation to you. I do about 400 miles a week and couldn't afford to keep running the impreza. I looked at a few vRSs but thought they were all expensive (they seem to hold their value very well indeed). In the end I bought a Mk iv golf tdi 150 3dr, which I thought was slightly better value. Similar in many ways to the vRS, although it's a little bit bigger, probably a bit worse in the corners (it really does feel nose heavy), but it is great at what it does. Reliable and cheap to run. On my steady commute (A roads) to and from work I can average 58-60 mpg easily and if I need to overtake it has got the torque to do it. Something to give some thought to perhaps.

 

Anyone thought about the Fiat Bravo either petrol turbo or diesel turbo. 165bhp and 300lbft of torque averaging 50mpg (in theory). It looks blooming gorgeous as well.

 

I've been looking at the VRS recently. You can buy a new one for less than most of the secondhand stock on the Skoda Approved Used site with the current 5% VAT offer.
Spec a few options and it gets pricey but it still seems like a lot of car for the money.
