READ THIS: Stopped by Police/VOSA.
This is nothing new, VOSA have been doing random checks for years, thing is they happen so infrequently that the chances of you getting stopped are practically nil. If you are stopped then unlucky but you can plead ignorance on a lot of stuff....
The engine number - they are correct, it's on the V5, change the engine and you have to send it off to the DVLA to inform them. I've done it before when I had to have a re-con engine in my sh*tty old Vauxhall many years ago.
The blue tint bulbs - chavvy though they are you can buy road legal ones: http://www.powerbulbs.com/product_detail.asp?prod=58 Assuming something similar to these they can **** off
Smoked indicators - it's a fair cop I guess.
HID kits - worst case you'll be asked to remove them and given an advisory to change them. Now you could just put normal bulbs back in, get it inspected and go back to using the HIDs. Chances of getting caught again are low but I guess if you did a second time you'll get the book thrown at you. Not exactly crime of the century though is it? Or don't take the risk and go back to using halogen bulbs.
As for emissions, hey it passed when you got your MoT, sorry officer thought it had been running a bit rough of late I'll get it checked out / was about to book it in to be looked at. Put the cats back, get it retested, and hey presto emissions fine
Even if you got pulled again what's to say it's not another fault that's causing the problem.
Anyway upshot is don't panic folks....

But tbh, the best way to get away WITHOUT any problems is to co-operate, and be polite, at least until you know what's going on.

I was told by my MOT tester that HID's require washers.
I've got blue glassed halogens for my main beams in an effort to match the xenon whiteness...they're still yellow in comparison to the xenons so not sure where plod is coming from regarding a blue tint on the bulb, as CD said...they can f#ck off.
i got stopped in wakefield the same a few yaers ago. Its generally vosa flexing thier muscles but its normally small scale as they dont have that much man power. very strict and unreasonable from my experience. i had a small slit in tyre not to cords, they said i couldnt drive off without changing my wheel. so i politley explained how the law stands as i was a tyre tech for kwik fit at the time and he backed down as he was wrong. Didnt like it though
The officer I spoke to mentioned a brightness and a different apparent colour to a halogen bulb, so asked me what was in it.
He DIDN'T check my answer, but took it on face value.
Not sure where that leaves us, but hey, I'm NOT telling anyone what to do, just what happened to me today and what was said.

im just glad my hids are standard issue on my hawkeye lol,
even though they are self leveling my friend got stopped in perth by cops as they said she had flashed them,when she said it would be the lights leveling out ,they checked it over to make sure they were not aftermarket hids.
they told her that they are cracking down on illegal aftermarket parts(not "e" marked)
and this was last yr,
im just glad my hids are standard issue on my hawkeye lol,

Aye, but there HAVE been examples of people having to remove tints, and having loud exhausts condemned.
Just because HIDs are not involved YET, let's not get complacent. £100 odd for a kit is a lot if the cops make you remove it

Sorry it didn't come across correctly, I meant a few years ago it was a massive crime to have tint's and everyone with tints was getting grief that died off then it was noise and so on
I got pulled by VOSA last year, they said the Nur Spec was to loud and to take the car for a MOT to see if it passed, then when it does take the MOT to the local cop shop..... I got my Blitz from my MOT'er
They looked at my HID's and realized they were JDM closed units and not an aftermarket set
My number plates on my bonnet and they said that was fine, even though i get told on here that its illegal

They would save more lives / money if they spent as much time fixing the f*****g potholes in the roads. People swerving to avoid smashing their suspension in a huge hole is far more dangerous than a different set of headlights. Oh wait a minute, you can't fine a pothole though.....
just wondering then i gotta put a new bottom end in, will i have to notify dvla or not. If i was pulled for this check. So will i get away with it then

I see one of your points was "illegal to show blue lights etc" actually its not illegal - I remember going down this thread when I had a Pajero - it is illegal to have flashing blue lights. There was loads of info about this and I cant remember the actual wording but it is something obscure like they dont actually say specifically that blue lights are illegal but doesnt say they are legal!!

The official line on replacement HID lamps is here: http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps which basically says "...must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension..."
"...it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above."

+1. Especially true when the only MOT advisory you get is a pot hole damaged tyre.

So, really, what we are all saying is it's better and easier to leave the car well alone and use it as it was intended?

pants the blue bulb thing is hourse crap, he can't do you cus what colour do they show when switched on...........white they know this as do i cus my uncle is a traffic cop, they play on the fact that we the public don't know the exact law on car mods, out of all u have put the only thing that is bang on is the insuerance part, also if ur car is an import i am pretty sure e-marked lens are not requiered cus the country of origin does not require them, as for the hid's there not illegal and why you they be removed did he say or is it they just seem a little brighter than others, what about audi's hid kit that shines blue at an angle, cops nothing better to do, i followed 1 yesterday with a brake light out and only half the eye level light working,
hahahaha that happend to me also, although i was taking the pi$$ the light transmition was 2.7 hahahahaha 100% darker than limo, he said i need to remove them and get car re-mot'd which i did but found out that the side glass is not part of the mot and is not tested so they can whistle dixxi next time
