Argos it! Biggest scam in the country?

I think a lot of people seek to justify their position in the social order by slagging certain things, full of it round here, people who wouldnt be seen dead in a Ford or Vauxhall, wouldnt shop at Asda, shock horror someone might think I am not massively rich and successful ! they shop at Waitrose or M and S only yet can be seen with a Q7 parked outside TKMaxx desperately seeking something with a designer label you would actually wear because it has a label that confers their taste and social standing, Its full of them round here, desperate to make a show of their wealth and taste, thats why things like RR Sports kind on rankle with me, probably a nice vehicle, ruined by hordes of Cheshire orange mummies and aplha male dads lording it round like they are special
Ok, we all like nice stuff but avoiding the standard run of the mill stuff, you tend to miss stuff, sometimes I prefer value beans, sometimes I want a cheapo burger for that authentic at Oulton Park taste rather than a "Finest" one with Herbs and all sorts of other bollocks.
Argos serves a role, it isnt Cash Converters but neither is it the Apple shop

Lidl for cold meats and jam, Asda for table wine, Ford for inconspicuous runabouts, Waitrose for treats and luxuries, Argos for walk in, walk out cheap and cheerful kiddies presents. An allegiance to a demographically engineered brand group makes you a mug, not socially aloft. A fool and their money, Emporors new clothes, etc. Apart from Elizabeth Duke which is exclusively for dolts and will forever be so.

I will admit (not ashamed btw) that I have bought/been bought stuff from Elizabeth Duke. Not for a long time as it has become more and more crap/nothing 'nice', and not even cheap enough to justify accepting it's far from the best.
(I only get silver jewellery, so if there is something I like, it doesn't really matter too much where it comes from)

I use Argos, I agree it's not as much of a bargain as it used to be, especially with places like Asda undercutting prices on childrens toys & games.
I like the convenience of it. I don't have time to trail round shops to look for something. I google, see if Argos is the cheapest or not, reserve online and then rock up to collect using the self serve tills.
I still use Argos if its a few quid more expensive (depending on item of course) as I find my time and sanity more valuable than £3. I'd rather pull up right outside Argos, nip inside and be out quick than trail to town, drive round and round to find a parking space, pay for the parking and then battle the people to get to the shop.

I was selling a cheap car and wanted to keep my good CD player. The deal with the buyer was I would replace it with a basic one so I went into argos and bought the cheapest Sony they had. Got home, opened the box, removed the little bag with the face plate box, the instructions etc and then removed the stereo unit to find it was some crappy old radio cassette that looked like it had been found in a scrapyard.
Obviously some dick had bought the Sony, kept it, replaced it with this old thing, wrapped it up with the Sony accessories and returned the lot to the shop for a refund, who had not checked it before banging it back out for sale.
I went back to the store to be told "couldn't happen, we don't re-sell returned items blah blah blah" and the ***** concluded by accusing me of pulling the switch myself.
I wasn't budging so they called the cops, who listened to both sides of the story then told me it was tough titty as I could not prove anything.
£80 down the flusher.

It's easy for people to slag off Argos. Yes the prices in the Catalogue are out of date, and you can buy cheaper online elsewhere.
Not everyone has access to the internet. Argos is convenient, and still cheaper that other places, and although there main Catalogue's prices maybe more expensive than other places, but that's why they have the deal cataloges.
I very rarely use Argos. Bought something in there just the other month. Wanted something quickly, they had it in stock, and the price was no more expensive than anywhere online.

Argos in my opinion is a great company. I have spent a fortune there over the last couple of years.
All our new bedroom furnature, display cabanet, kettle, dvd storage, baby stair gate, the list is endless for me.
Am I a chav? No! I like them because they are convenient, Pick what I want on line or from 'the wishing book' as it's known by the kids and I can drive there in 5 minutes and get what I want there and then.
Twice I have had problems and twice they went out of there way to ensure I was happy, I appreciated that particulary as one was my fault (broke glass on my display cabinet whilst building it)
We are getting our son a 19" TV for Christmas and they had one with built in free view for £99.00 the average I found from shopping around was £130 so there are bargains there.
Argos = from me!

Argos is okay -- they were the pioneers of the reserve&collect at store and for that it is very convenient:
Check the price, check the stock, reserve and go and pick it up. Works very well.

Just opened a brand new Argos near me so must be doing alright despite t'internet. It is worth knowing their returns policy which is no return on most things unless faulty. I bought a Wii remote for £21 - was going to get it online but thought I would just get it whilst in town. Then crossed the road and saw them for £17 in Tesco my own fault, but at most retailers you would be able to take it back then go and buy the cheaper one.

I'd have to admit, I would have a real inner smugness if I was a billionaire and shopped in the likes Argos. I'd intentionally drive a rusty old Fiat Tipo, wear clothes bought from Asda and only dine/drink out in a Weatherspoons. Just to get the likes of the typical gold-digger orange-tanned bottle-blondes to sneer from their SUVs thinking that's their mortgaged show of wealth amounts to some sort of superiority....Only later for them to see my name at the top of the 'Mail's rich list.
There are limits, dear boy .....

Yes, the Tipo was the first fully Galvanised mass market car and as such did not rust, the rest however did crumble in traditional Fiat fashion. Actually they were a pretty good car, a boss of mine back in about 94 had a turbo diesel and was the proto "diesel bore" going on about torque before it was invented, it did pull quite well when I drove it I have to say, but he wore a bow tie and was called Nigel, he was quite a tosser !
My other abiding memory of the Tipo was avoiding the hairdressers when there was one parked outside as the lady who owned it had taken a shine to me and when cutting my hair was rather suggestive and dragged her chest across me and said things like "I bet you love that", no actually you scare me a little, especially in an otherwise empty shop with the closed sign up, sounds like a fantasy scenario, beleive me, it wasnt and I cant help a little frisson of mild panic whenever I see a Tipo, not that that ever happens nowadays.
I will take mine looking standard with a Fiat Coupe 20 v turbo engine please.

But let's face it, if you're in a hurry to get something, you check online if it's available at a store near you, you can reserve it, pay for it at a booth when you enter the store (no line to stand it) then collect it, it can be convenient. I wouldn't normally go into the store when I'm in the vicinity but I have used their reservation service twice and it's worked for me.
The choice was going into town with hoards of shoppers being pushed and jostled about by ignorant chavs who inhabit CMK and Northampton and then standing in a que to buy the same thing at the same price - not fecking likely!
