3.0d Audi versus 3.0d BMW is a no brainer.
I hate to agree with Matee but BMW have nailed diesels compared to Audi. At the mo looking into a 3l diesel 2005-2007, and like for like the BMW has more power, less emissions, cheaper tax, better mileage and is faster than the Audi. I think the Audi interior and spec is better, but as a driver, the cars performance/ability is more important and this is where the BM hands the Audi its *** on a plate.
Plus we all know that 4wd isn't the be all and end all, thats why we're in OM and not Scooby General, ever since I owned a scoob I could appreciate the downsides 4wd meant with weight and drivetrain losses.

My RS6 (earlier shape one) is superior to my 535d m sport in every way and is much nicer (and faster) than any of my 3 previous imprezas including Spec C and Type R.I will no doubt get bored of the 520bhp at some point and want something different but not until the kids are a bit bigger

I'd like a 911 turbo but the mrs wont let me so i don't know really.I don't thrash about in any car i have owned so i have never or will ever get the full use from all the power,I just like a car that is nice to look at,nice to drive and has a bit of poke when i need it.

I have owned 3 scoobs including a spec c, 350 z, and now have a B7 RS4, had my mates Remapped 535D Msport for 2 weeks and no doubt it was a good car but every car mentioned i have owned had better feel and position on the road.
Face fact, your OPINION is biased on NOT SEEING beyond Beemers.
Looking forward to your usual sarcastic comment about me and my cars or even a personal insult if i have upset you enough.

As mentioned you are comparing very different cars and a 335d is actually a fair bit quicker and dynamically superior to a 535d anyway.
Anyway, carry on ranting. Always fun to watch.

Sorry Alan but you are talking nonsense, if you need 4wd to give you safety you can't drive for toffee. I've driven a 500+ BHP M5 for 3 years and have never lost control of it. I feel very safe with my wife and two small kids in this car. If I didn't I wouldn't own it.
The so called recent pinnacle for Audi ie the B7 RS4? I owned one for approx 72 hours before I sold it (for a tiny profit), it was too slow. It was way over stated for power, they don't really produce 420 BHP.
As for these so called classy Audi interiors, personally I don't like them, and to me they are far from classy.
I've owned RS, AMG and M Power and I'm afraid to say there is only one king and and his name starts with a M.
I would never buy another Audi, might buy another AMG, but will definitely own the next M5.

Seriously though, I would disagree that there is any consensus that 4wd is some how safer than rear wheel drive. Why do you say this and what data is it based on?

Not on data, just from many opinions that Ive heard over many years. Topgear, 5th gear magazine reviews etc. Why? Do you have data that says that rear wheel drive is safer?

I'd feel a lot 'safer' in my M5 with multiple airbags, huge crumple zones, big brakes, excellent tyres than in a 1998 WRX with none of that but 4 wheel drive.
So it's not as straightforward to just say 4wd cars are 'safer', you'll need to qualify what you mean, and saying you read it in a magazine or James May says so is not really an answer.

But still a bit of a slow coach I love it when the audi a8's drive right up your bumber thinking they are going to harras you into moving over then a slight press of the go faster pedal leaves a monsterous gap between me and the audi and I'm on the inside lane by this time making it look like the audi is hogging up all the fast lane

I've driven a few fast Audi's from an B4 S4, to the V8 RS4, to the current R8.
Audi got the handling right with the V8 RS4. Loved driving that car. The last RS4, and previous S4's were very numb to drive. Quick? yes, but soleless.
The R8 is just on another level for Audi. People really do need to drive this car, is it's such a bl00dy nice car to drive. It's got brilliant handling, and that engine (V8) is glorious. It sounds awsome too. Haven't driven the V10 yet, but will do soon.
I was hoping the TT RS was going to be another winner for Audi, and quite fancied one. Early reports were it was fast, but dull, so saved £15k and bought a Nissan 370Z instead. Reading Evo's reports on their TT RS, seem to suggest it is a good car afterall.
It looks like Audi have dropped a Bollox with the RS5. Why they stuck with the V8 instead of the Turbo/supercharged V6 is beyond me. Could have had more power/torque in an engine that probably weights less too. The handling? Haven't driven one, but reports suggest it rubbish.
I like the Audi A5, and specced a 3.0TDI (again before deciding on the 370Z) and as an everyday car, it's ticks every box. But it no fun car.
I'll take a test drive of the TT RS when the Nissan is up for replacement, and judging by Chris Harris's report on BMW's 1-series M, I'll take a look at that.

If I remeber correctly, Audi pinched the guy responsible for BMW's chassis dynamics. Thus creating the RS4, and probably the R8.
I believe said bloke is now back at BMW.
Could be wrong, but I'm sure I read that somewhere.

Drove the 370Z and just could not get on with it, so little space inside. TTRS Cab is probably going to the replacmant for my S3 - if I feel it worth the extra over a TTS cab !
R8 both V8 and V10 I just loved & so nice to drive but cant afford either of them yet.
I think a lot of time choice of cars depend on what roads driving on & where live. For me its mostly badly maintained A road or even worse B roads and a steep hill that goes to my house.
Its fun to watch the rwd BMW etc (and the fwd Audis as well) struggle when there is 1mm of snow on the ground trying to get up the hill.
I feel that BMW have mastered the diesel engines better than Audi, but need to take a lesson from Audi on how to do an interior. And Audi need to learn from BMW on how to mass produce a fun / sporty handling car.
I'm not a believer in cubic capacity argument, do like well designed turbo engines.
