The Newage 2001-2005 WRX TMIC (Bug / Blob) isn't very efficient, both from a pressure drop or cooling point of view.

The Bug / Blob STi TMIC was a masterpiece of engineering and can cope with 400 BHP on a good day

If you are looking at 325 plus BHP reliably on a Bug WRX you need to change the TMIC or move to a FMIC.

People have already mentioned the spark plugs (PFR7b), fuel pump and necessary injectors

Ah sorry Neil, I didn't realise the New Age WRX's TMIC was that ineffective - thought it was capable of c.350bhp.

However, if you still go that route, then as mentioned by Midlife, looks like you'll still get around 320bhp. In which case then, you won't need those 550cc injectors - so the money retained will net you an extra 100+ kebabs!

Top Mount Intercooler and Front Mount Intercooler.

The original Subaru factory fit one is a TMIC - sits at the rear of the engine bay, at the top, against the bulkhead. You cant mistake it - looks like a horizontal mini radiator.

Here's a list of recommended mods for different power levels for a newage WRX (Andy Forrest Performance - conservative estimates because I know a few folk with td05 16g turbos and level 2a mod's that have 330+ bhp, i.e. very similar power to a VF34/35 but slightly faster spool-up.
Typical used prices- TD05 16g-£100-£150; VF34/35-£300-350):

__________________________________________________ ____
01-05 WRX 2.0 UK/EURO STD 218/225 BHP

Level 1 260-280 bhp

Full Decat or Sportscat exhaust from turbo back 2.5 or 3” bore
Ecutek Custom ECU recalibration (similar to PPP)
Twin boost set up for high/low power switchable in-car
Walbro 255 l/hr uprated fuel pump
K+N panel filter

Level 2 290-310 bhp

Full Decat or Sportscat exhaust from turbo back 2.5 or 3” bore.
Decat uppipe Pre turbo
Walbro 255 l/hr uprated fuel pump
K+N panel filter
Ecutek Custom ECU recalibration
Twin boost set up for high/low power switchable in-car
AFP 04-H custom ported hybrid turbo
High Flow multi spray fuel injectors 550cc (380cc as std)
Uprated turbo to intercooler 'Y' pipe
NGK PFR 7B uprated spark plugs

Level 2(a) 300-320 bhp

Substitute VF34/35 or TD05-16G turbo in place of AFP04H for additional 10-20bhp but with slightly later turbo spool up.

Level 3 360-390 bhp

Full Decat turbo back 3” bore exhaust system
Tubular exhaust headers and flow matched uppipe
Walbro 255 l/hr uprated fuel pump
K+N panel filter
EcuTek custom ECU calibration.
Twin boost set up for high/low power switchable in-car
550cc Multi Spray Injectors
Fuel Lab turbo specification fuel pressure regulator with fitting kit & gauge
STI TMIC from 01-06 STI including undertray
AFP 05-20G custom ported turbocharger modified to fit with TGV
NGK PFR 7B uprated spark plugs

Level 3 Power may shorten the life of the transmission system this will depend on use and driving style. The 01 onwards UK 5 speeds do currently seem to be coping well with this level of output although as mileage increases this may become more of an issue.

Level 4 390-410 bhp

Full Decat turbo back 3” bore exhaust system
Tubular exhaust headers and flow matched uppipe
Walbro 255 l/hr uprated fuel pump
EcuTek custom ECU calibration.
Twin boost set up for high/low power switchable in-car
STI TMIC from 01-07 STI including undertray
AFP 321H custom turbocharger with fitting kit
Twin port 650cc Injectors
Custom cold air induction system

Level 5 420-450 bhp

Full Decat turbo back 3” bore exhaust system
Tubular exhaust headers and flow matched uppipe
Walbro 255 l/hr uprated fuel pump
Twin port 650cc Injectors
EcuTek custom ECU calibration.
Twin boost set up for high/low power switchable in-car
Fuel Lab turbo specification fuel pressure regulator with fitting kit & gauge
STI TMIC from 01-07 STI including undertray or optional FMIC
AFP 321T custom turbocharger with fitting kit
Custom cold air induction system
AVCR boost controller
NGK racing 8 spark plugs

Note We do not recommended level 4-5 on standard internals, clutch or gearbox. As a mimium we recommend forged pistons
and steel rods, steel head gaskets, uprated clutch. We also recommend either a PPG gear kit or 6 speed gearbox conversion ( from later STI)

PLEASE NOTE

We have included the tuning section us a guide to what we consider to be the most cost effective steps during tuning. This has been compiled with the benefit of experiencing hundreds of upgrades. There are other parts/turbos that can be substituted but the listed parts we have found to give the most consistant results over many installations.

I'm going along the front entry TD05 route later this summer along with other mods. Did you use the original TD05 oil feed pipe and just bolt it on to a newage head?
