Local dealer in Cheshire has sold five so far this year to my knowledge.

They have tried to get hold of more but have been told that the allocation is now exhausted and no more will come available.

Ian Grieve had the new Forester Turbo - 240BHP Direct Injection petrol. That impressed me a lot If they can do 240BHP for the forester what can they do for the new WRX STi with that engine??

I added info on my car as a start, i thouhght it would be good to get some balance and see if other peoples cars on higher mileages havent gone boom. Reading the thread it does seem like a small percentage of cars.

I suppose the worst case scenario is i have to send my car in for upgrade to Cosworth CS400 spec. as i am told a dealer is working on offering this upgrade.

I have also read that the 2011 Sti has revised heads, so i would hope that by now subaru have sorted the issue, they have had long enough ....

Here's what Subaru have said http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/news/leg...-litre-engines

the 08/09 STI is designed to be completely reliable at around 300 BHP (and 330 BHP for the STI 330S)
So what's the difference in engine internals between an STi and a STi 330s ?
If there is no difference than that would prove Subaru's comment to be bollocks.

"Material faults are not the reason for ring land fractures, even though they are often the suspected cause. This type of fracture always results from overstressing the material." (Piston Damages - Recognising and Rectifying, section 3.4.4)
I'm sure the material is ok and it is over stressing that causes the issue. It's the definition of what constitutes over stressing that's the real issue. It would seem the standard STi power stresses is to much for this type of piston.

Not Mangoletsi. It wouldnt be right for me to say.

I think between the 330S and the new 2011 the differences may be revised cylinder heads (if what i read was correct) and slightly larger intercooler. Nothing else jumping out.

Well one is Euro 4 compliant and the other is Euro 5 compliant, so i would think something would need to be slightly different even if its only tune.

In this case over stressing is considered to be through excessive heat build up , expansion contraction & so on ,, & having or providing minimal tolerances to allow this process / in simple terms its flawed

well my is a 330s and my number 3 piston went on a 09 plate. subaru uk are not very helpful and the dont want to admit that there pistons are not up to the job. i cant beleave that they think that if you hit the rev lmiiter a few times it will damage your engine what earth the think a rev limiter is for. this is what they think corses it. i know in the rb 320 it revs two 7000rpm my revs to 6500 and i dont dear go near that shows that theres a problem if they need to keep lowing it

I tried to inject some humour into a negative situation. I failed miserably.

When mine went pop i had NO sense of humour , in fact i was ready to go on a murderous rampage and wipe out the human race.
Once i got it back forged my sense of humour returned and the human race was once again safe from destruction.

That really does highlight the rock bottom level that Subaru have reached if people are needing to compare their car ownership to death in order to find solace.

Well i wouldn't worry about it. Subaru are only going to be shipping in the granny cars from now on. In 5 years an Impreza will be a rare sight on our roads.

Date bought: Nov 2011
Mileage: 0 (new, model 2009 though !)
Date of failure: May 2012
Mileage: 11kkm (~ 6700 miles)
Outcome: second piston cracked, no damage to the block... Rebuilt with cosworth internals.
There is a no warranty policy in saudi arabia for those cars - Wonder why?...

But it was MY09, just bought in late 2011 (in Saudi cars with manual transmission remain in showrooms for years...).

However the case is not isolated to 2009 - my friend from Ch got his 2011 sedan's tuned with ecutek and the same second piston cracked couple months later with 26kkms on the dash...

Thats what I meant - yours was a 2009 model just registered in 2011. I did not realise there had been 2011 model failures. Certainly not heard of one this thread to date but I must admit I dont hang out here as much any more after moving to a Focus RS MK2 (mainly due to the piston issues / reliability / warranty it has to be said).

Posted this in another thread...
Just took my MY11 into my dealer, I suspected a noisy accelerator pot and just wanted it checking over, the senior technician took the car to check & download the log data and 30 minutes later I was told they didn't want me to drive the car away... apparently there are knock logs against cylinders 1, 3 and 4 and they suspect early ringland failure and are initially talking short block replacement subject to inspection.
Not quite what I was expecting out of a bog standard Type UK having only done 8000 miles!
Mentioned it had used half a litre of oil in 8000 miles and that raised an eyebrow along with the mention of random power drops at 4.5k ish under acceleration.
Just have to wait now for an inspection and confirmation of the initial diagnosis and there was me thinking I'd treat myself to the 320 upgrade... perhaps not now.
