Oh and the camera fad can be more expensive than the scoob fad when you get into it.

What about a 20D? Is that too advanced for a first camera?

Nope not at all. 20d is a cracking camera. A little old now as the 30d is about 4 years old and the 40d is about 12 - 18 months old. But still plenty of features and resolution.
