Depends on your mileage really, and whether it bothers you about the tax etc.
I only do 4k miles a year in my car so to me it doesn't matter whether I get D or I if I was buying one from an economy POV, but it would annoy me having to physically pay out £400+ a year in tax, on top of say £500 for insurance per year.
I think a 335i would be more fun and suit you better, but you can't beat the better running costs of a 335d and if you will be doing motorway miles of any sort the d would make more sense but not sure if it's worth an extra £2k or so.

I'm right back where I was when I bought the 330Ci, the increased economy from the diesel, didnt really justify the increased purchase price of the vehicle and fuel.
The insurance on the petrol is the same price (well, £4 a year more expensive!) as the diesel, so that isnt a factor.

Good post Matt. This has completely put me off the 335 now as I only like the bigger wheels. That sticky is shocking, my mate got all 4 alloys changed twice on his RX8 a few years back because they had slightly corroded. It seems people pay hundreds of pounds getting new alloys then the same thing happens, they haven't even rectified the problem. 
Hard to keep clean though.
If you want 18s and no headaches, I like these a lot:

Jay - please ignore Pov. He's a die in the wool chav with a bazzed up Seat Leon who thinks it's quicker than an Evo. Utterly deranged fool who drives a wrong wheel drive sh1tbox hatch usually reserved for spotty teenagers. He knows zilch about cars but will try very hard to look clever - it fails every time. Aftermarket alloys? Those are for chavs too.

You'll have figured by now that this car was well liked and has left a lasting impression. We're used to engines being the focal point of BMWs, but for the diesel to replicate this expectation is truly remarkable. Even more amazing is that this diesel actually performs as well as the petrol models and, for now at least, is probably the quickest 3 Series you can buy. What this means is that this car is not only a class leader and benchmark, it is also something of a watershed in that it is not only a highly capable diesel performance car, but also it is the first diesel I can think of that is a highly capable performance car in its own right. By that I mean at the top of the class as a sporting offering, never mind as a sports wagon under which guise it goes some way beyond humbling the competition and the word humiliation begins to come into play. Easily capable of withstanding comparison with its petrol equivalents, this is a diesel that sells on sporting prowess rather than economy. It's a brilliant car, admittedly at a price, that completely redefines the definition of diesel motoring and may well open the door to a raft of pure performance diesels in the near future. As it is, the 335d Touring may just be all the car you'd ever need.

Im sure the 335d/335i are great cars with amazing engines, but.....
They just look so bland and ordinary.. and 3 series BMWs are everywhere!
Personally, id want something that stood out from the herd but, hey we're all different!
They are fantastic cars dynamically but i would sacrifice some of the dynamics for something that stood out from the crowd . Anyway, just my thoughts but i hope you continue to enjoy those fantastic engines!

Yes its a BMW, yes its a 3 series but, it is for work really.
My plan is to get an R34 GTR for weekend and trackday use, later in the year.

Matt - we are completely opposite. I like "stealth" cars that blast everything (well most things) away. I LOVE the fact that my soot chucking hearse looks almost identical to a 318d SE...!
Jay - Evo mag prefers the 335i BTW!
I'm not keen on the 3er saloon but I think the coupe is gorgeous. I like the Touring a lot too but the coupe is nicer looks wise. Just a bit more impractical!

Why should you have to buy after market alloys on a £30k plus car.
I can't believe you are comparing your Seat to a e93 BMW just because it is quicker from 70-75mph when the Beemer is in 6th gear with your nana driving. I only know one person that lusts after a Seat Leon and he is 17 and just passed his test, so grow up sunshine.

You shouldnt have to buy aftermarket alloys on a 30k car, but how thick are you to then go and buy the exact same alloys again only for them to crack 10 miles later
Like I said, I have the vids, and the beemer got cained. Lots of Cupras/ed30's which are fwd and are really quick down the pod all owned by grown men. They would probably say that the only people who lust after scoobies are chavs so how about you grow up with the stereotypes and generalisations

Weirdly, that has now happened twice. Rang a BMW dealer in Blackpool that were showing one... didnt have it on his stocklist! Same as the dealer in Edinburgh
Anway... I have found another black one, with nav & bluetooth, beige leather, 40k miles, Star Style 230 8/9Jx19's main dealer... £20,250... and they do have it in stock!! Putting a deposit on it very shortly over the phone, the sales woman is emailing me the full details then calling to take the deposit. The agreement being if it isnt as described when I get there, they refund the deposit and pay my travel expenses.
Rang work to make sure they're ok with me getting a petrol, and was told actually, you'll get a better fuel allowance, the diesel guys are always moaning because the powers that be expect them to get 60MPG!! Win Win

NICE ONE!!! Wicked cars. I think the petrol suits the Coupe a bit better anyway.
"Right" colour paint and leather too (I wash mine constantly but find rather therapeutic!). Can't wait to see pics and see what you think!!

I've now got two different dealers trying to sell me their respective cars!!
Unbelievably, they're very very similar. Both black, both beige heated leather, ones black trim, ones grey trim, both satnav & bluetooth, both folding mirrors, sun protection glass, both Star Style 230 8/9Jx19 wheels, both 56 plate. The 335i has 40k, the 335D has 45k and an elec sunroof. The I is £20,250 and the D is £20,999 - I've asked them both to knock a grand off and put 6 months tax.... will keep you updated....
