That's impressive, last time it was that cold round here I was still at school (at a guess 18 years ago).

Beemers don't have too much weight on the rear wheels and also the big fat tyres make the problem worse.

My old E12 M535i was dreadful in the snow and was sometimes unable to climb the medium hill in the road where I lived, it was even worse in reverse! Outstanding car in the wet or the dry however.

I'm slightly worried now...My mums partner has borrowed her BMW today.

Whilst I have utmost confidence that I or my mum can get the best out of it (knowing all the DCS and gear selection/handbrake tricks), the problem is he can't drive for toffee.

Problem is I broke my tow rope. I do have a steel rope rated at 20tons, but its PITA (use it for offroading, hence its very dirty).

Had the weighing scales out last night and to be honest the snow didn't seem to be any heavier than normal.

I was due in Leeds today but apparently they had about 3 inches last night so decided i'd stay in and eat the remains of last nights Chinese Takeaway, also hope this doesn't cause me issues in getting to and from the Arsenal v Bolton game tomorrow.

I hope Arsenal have a heated pitch as it is going to snow very heavily in London in the next 24 hours*.

Hi Les hope you had a good christmas.
I always find it interesting how an area that gets huge amounts of snow and ice makes RWD BMWs However the German and Austrian Politzi I know prefer the Audis in the snow over the BMWs

However I guess alot of it is down to the tyres and how used to driving in snow conditions you are.

I posted this up on another thread.
80-90kph in a BMW 2days ago in an Austrian blizard - which is way more severe than anything the Uk ever sees as a rule. You can move about in the snow

[img=http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/8779/p1020105n.th.jpg]

If the UK gets more of this weather then perhaps it will become better equiped to deal with it - we shall see. Perhaps they will make winter tyres a legal requirement?

Steve

Its not a legal requirement in germany is it - i thought the insurance simply wouldnt pay out if you were on summer tyres

i heard that in germany they are legally req'd, and some companies have snapped them all up and are charging a fortune for them.

found this:-

Germany

Motorists are obliged to make sure they have correct tyres to suit the winter weather conditions. This may mean the use of winter tyres (with M&S or snowflake symbol) and in extreme weather, the additional use of snow chains.

Vehicles with summer tyres fitted are not allowed to be driven on roads covered with snow and ice. Fines are in place for vehicles found to be doing so.

I'm really starting to get the hang of this snow driving

Not much fun when you get stuck going up hill (like I did 3 times today, but always managed to find an alternative route!), but traction control off obviously and deserted snowy roundabouts can be a lot of fun!
