I have both the Kef speakers and the Yam amp and they are a great combination.

Bought them from Creative Audio - Welcome who give a great service.

Phil, are you running both subs??

Does the 607 have a 'late night' button on its menu? If it does, always press it when you watch a film to see whether its on or not. Some films, by default, set it to on. This lowers all the big bang type effects (ie for watching at night, kids asleep etc).

Scroll through it, and make sure its off.

By far the best hd soundtrack I've heard is the Dark Knight, its just stunning. Beware with that though, as the default setting is regular dolby 5.1, so you have to go into the audio menu of the disc (not amp) and choose hd audio.

Enjoy!

yep, running both subs running, the 607 has a 'night mode' but i've not done anything with it.

I've set all the speakers to 80hz, the front sub as well, the 2nd sub at 90hz, both sub volumes are at half way on the turnie ****.

Listening last night the subs kicked in when they needed, but found when watching normal TV, the subs don't over power the room now, is this cus the other speakers are at 80hz. they don't give out too much bass, as you mentioned, leaving the subs to do their job as and when.

Phil, what do you mean you have set the sub to 80hz?? Where have you done that, ie on the sub itself?

I think you've gone wrong mate!

I hadnt so thanks. Interesting although not sure how much I learnt other than to get my protractor out when I place my rears Like your post Id be more interested in the sub specific vid.

I looked for those Q Acoustics but everywhere sold out as newer range coming out - hence the decent prices I guess. I ended up ordering the KEF 1005.2's as they cost me £250 on Amazon (well HughesDirect trading on Amazon) as had a £150 voucher from work burning a hole in my virtual wallet. I was concerned about the bulky size of the Q's esp the centre. Will see how the Kefs perform. As a first step into Home Cinema Sound Im sure they will be good enough for me for now.

Just gotta pick up a Yamaha V765 from Richer Sounds next week and grab some speaker cable.

Cheers

yep on the Q Acoustic sub,
Specifications (1000SI subwoofer)

- Enclosure type: Ported
- Bass Unit: 200mm long throw
- Amplifier power: 100Watts
- Crossover frequency: 45Hz - 175Hz (var.)
- Cabinet dimensions (WxDxH): 320 x 350 x 330mm
- Weight (per cabinet): 14.1Kg
- Packed dimensions (WxDxH): 444 x 412 x 450mm (single)
- Packed weight (per cabinet): 14.5 Kg (single)

there's two ***** on the back, one to turn it up and one to alter the Hz response, the yamaha has the same thing too.

gone wrong on what?

Simon, you'll be happy with whichever you go for, unless you have loads of other speakers around you to compare (ie: in shop), you wouldn't notice much difference.
What made you go for the Yamaha AV amp?

I've had a set of Kef 2005's since release, and now act as rear+surround+centre with the XQ-20's up front.

Great little speakers, living room friendly with stands, IMHO.

I went for the Yamaha as general consensus is it has a warmer sound than the Onkyo 607. It also gets good reviews for its video upscaling and is able to pass through HDMI when in standby mode which seems handy. Im not sure if the Onkyo does that as well. Its pretty close between them.

Everyone says demo them all but finding a shop that can do that and that you want to buy from is easier said than done. Its always a bit of a lottery as you cant mirror the layout and accoustics of your own home and even if you can a 15-30min demo wouldnt help much imho.

As I said Ive not got any real expectations as never had my own sound setup for movies and not even got a mate with a decent setup. So Im sure it will be far better than my Pioneer Plasma plugged into my KEF floor standers via a Sony QS Amp I run my CD player from

My worry about the KEF eggs was the size coming from something so small but plenty of people seem to have them on here and sound happy with them so they must be half decent.

hmmm, what does 'warmer' sound like?
you still going to use the KEf floorstanders too, then you can make a 6.1/7.1 system

Phil what did you end up with crossover setting wise on your sub? I ended up with the Kef's and the Sub Manual says set to full and 140hz and set AV amp to 120. AV amp manual says to set to 50% and auto setup leaves as 200hz?

Same question to Chip as you got the same setup as me.

Not really had a chance to crank it up yet. Watched Terminator Salvation on blu-ray last night and love the bit at the start when they attack Skynet and the A10's are flying around

Watched No Country for Old Men last night and that has to be the least surround sound enabled film on blu-ray. Random as well. One my brother got me for Xmas.

May try Black Hawk Down tonight.

the setting and volume ON both my subs is set half way, (80-90hz)
on the amp auto set up the LFE 120hz.

tbh, i've re done my auto set up and left the setings as the amp picks them, so far it sounds fine.
if too loud on the bass i turn the volume down direct on each sub

Hmmm maybe Im looking at this too simplistic but I thought that the crossover basically sets the level of frequency where the sub takes over and produces the lower frequency sounds. So if your amp is set to 120hz and your speakers at 80-90 doesnt that mean there is a section of 30-40hz not being handled?

I got some other questions re my Yamaha 765 amp but will post those on AV I think. 1 quick one though - does your amp display anything to tell you what format its picking up from your input device i.e. if you play a DTS Master enabled blu-ray does your Onkyo display that anywhere? Likewise for DD, Dolby HD etc?

As you can see Im a bit new to this

Cheers

do the auto set up and see how you go for a bit, u might be looking at it to be too complicated at the mo, your amp will sort everything out, see what you thik before you fddle too much.

onkyo 607: yep, if watching a bluray i set the sound setti to Dolby pro logic. then when the main film is playing... the feature film, not the trailers at the start, i can press display on the remote and it then displays what sound format its beig sent out in.. eg: DTS mater truesoundHD.

tbh, i think the amp knows its self what the sound format is.

I did the auto-setup with sub set at full volume and it reset crossover back to 200hz. Changed it back to 120hz and it sounds pretty good now although did tweak the sub level on the amp down a setting or two as too boomy. Maybe still a little too much bass but will tweak that per film I reckon.

Watched Transformers 2 on Sat night on DVD (girlfriends parents bought it on DVD for me by mistake) but the audio was still very good with all the fights and crash landings. Was well impressed. Little details like the pitter patter of falling mud spraying toward the screen.

I changed the display on my Yamaha and it said Dolby Digital for Transformers. When I put Terminator Salvation on blu-ray back in (DTS Master HD bla bla) it just says PCM. From what I gather PCM is good as uncompressed audio format but does that mean its DTS or am I missing something still?

I had Kef 2005.2 eggs for many years. The centre speaker i upgraded because it is not good enough. Upgraded to 5005 and the sub is lacking too. So changed to a Rel Quake. All linked together with QED silver anniversary. Was also using a Yam 6 series amp.

A nice setup for a decent size lounge. Clear. Didn't fill the room as well as my old Wharfedale Diamonds, but are much smaller.

Simon, do a auto set up again but set the volume and Hz on the sub to half way, then you can alter the BOOM as you want either more or less.
was Transformers II on bluray as well?

I watched it again.. well most of it saturday night, thought I need to increase the volume o the center channel (speaker) as spoken words seemed quite, even with volume on the main unit set at 45.
