So when did YOU pass your driving test?
Passed in 1972 aged 21 in a Vauxhall Viva ( driving school) after learning to drive in a mates ex GPO Minor 1000 van in the local fields at night, then officialy in my Dad's Ford Anglia 100E.
Then 2 years later managed to afford to buy a Ford Anglia 105E for £40.

Is there a prize for the oldest Scooby driver here? - Test passed Wait for it! August 1961!!!!!! In a sidevalve Ford Popular. Not easy to drive in `winklepicker` shoes!- Ask yer dad!
Most of you are probobly the same age as my son, he`s car nuts like the old man - 4x4 Sierra Cossie, and saving like mad for the Focus Cossie when it arrives.
Can anyone out there beat 1961?
Must go, its time for my afternoon nap.
JohnD
P.S. And yes I`ve had a quote for the Scoob from SAGA!!!!

In the intervening 3 years since I started this thread j.r-xrs has also passed his test, and my first post has been relegated to 8th!
I am surprised it survived in General though - these days the mods would surely have it in NSR as soon as look at it!

Dec 5th 1990 (56 days after 17th birthday) in a Diahatsu Charade Diesel, passed first time despite Mum, Dad and everyone else saying I'd done it too quick!!!
Had never driven in the daylight until my test.... scarry!

Still not passed mine

I've got 140 pounds in the world that will be spent on driving, cant afford to go out cant afford to do anything but drive. That means I've got just about enough for one last test and under 6 lessons
I've got 3k for a car but my **** of a dad won't let me get one so I can practice..
I don't fancy my chances TBH..

21st May 2002, day after a Maths exam in a blue fiesta. Just under six months after me b'day. Didn't have my first lesson till mid January tho (and I failed me theory first time too, so that took time...)
July 1981 in an Austin Maxi (remember them?) on first attempt - despite being taught entirely by my father (bank manager).
Previous posts re Triumph 2000s brought back memories of my first car - a Dolomite Sprint which I managed to write off within 6 months!!
The Dolly Sprint was, in its day, the equivalent of a Scooby or an EVO (but British!). 1850cc twin carb engine, RWD, and 0-60 in 8.9(?) seconds (bloody quick at the time), not too mention an exhaust the size of a peashooter!

9:25am 15th March 1990, two weeks to the day after my 17th birthday, driving my parents Orion Ghia i. I had to use my parents car as the instructor wouldn't let me use his car. I'd had ten lessons before the test, and went straight through, no mistakes.
That'll be the same Chaos who wants a Type R as his first car

January 1996 in a White Peugeot 205 inca special edition! I was 17.
My driving instructor was brilliant he had a fantastic pass rate.
Lessons cost £15 then and I could only afford 10 lessons so I spread them out over a few months! I was so nervous on the test day my instructor gave me some rescue remedy drops!
When I got home I got straight into my car .... a yellow beetle that I'd bought when I was 16. The first place I drove to on my own was B&Q!

IIRC, my lil bro, who passed in August 1st time, also paid about the same, with the same instructor, but some of my mates paid more than me with other instructors, so it probably depend son the instructor...
Yes Paul, I remember the bike test as you describe very well, and also when the examiner would step out on the road with his hand out for the emergency stop! I passed my bike test the day after my 16th birthday and the car test exactly a year later. I was in my dad's Morris 8 Series E, and nearly had the examiner in the screen on the emergency stop because I saw him lift his pencil to tap the dashboard from the corner of my eye! He took it in good part though
