Guessing that 15/50 fits that range for higher temperatures.

It should be fine for road use, would use something more appropriate quality-wise if you track the car.

Mobil made a fully synthetic for subaru's (classics) back in the day as they had no suitable other oil available (though 0W40 was available) and guess what viscosity it was? 5w40
15w50 is produced (well its motul actually) for the STI brand in japan as an optional upgrade.

The way I see it is that SWRT used to, I believe, run their cars on Motul... If it's good enough for them...

(Unless it was some special-to-the-Subaru-works-team, non-commercially available blend or something? )

I'd love to know what viscosity weight rating that stuff was!!!!

Is it entirely relevant though if the engine is rebuilt after every event?

So whats the difference with Mileers 10/60 and the Motul 15/50?

I've been using the Millers 10/60 for a long time and hasn't had a problem but have since been told that the Motul is better.

So what oil should i use on my current 600+ build?

Yes i do drag and track my car.

Oh ASPerformance does both oil at a good price and i know that Opie oil does the Motul at a better price when there is a special offer going.

Ahh, still the old Subaru myths float around: Mobil never specifically made an oil for a subaru. However Subaru garages wanting to use mobil oil but didn't want to use 0w-40 (which I'm still yet to see any official TSB from Subaru or I.M. ) may have to special order it if their supplier didn't have it in stock (not unheard of for lesser popular oils, especially when on paper their 0w-40 exceeded the spec of their 5w-40).

Subaru's only oils specification was to whatever APi/ACEA oil standards that was current during the year of manufacture. Nothing more. If Subaru needed some special requirement oil, they'd have their own standard - like VW, Merc, Vauxhall and BMW etc.

Mobil have always made a 5w-40 oil ( longer than 0w-40 ), just it was not always sold in retail packs (like alot of oils of any brand) and hence not found on the shelf at motor factors.

Shell and castrol et al are no different; For example: There are eight different flavours of Magnatec, and Mobil currently have nine different flavours of 5w-30 oil, yet on the shelf you may only see two maybe three of these actually sold in a retail bottle.

Sorry, this is irrelevant to the thread - but it's a bit of a light-hearted aside

The halfords own is made to a cost, and that cost is as low as possible.

Stick to a reputable proper brand.

Cheers

Viscosity, and quality.

The 300v 15w-50 is slightly thicker on start up then the 10w-60 (being a 15w and not a 10w) but when hot (100degc) the SAe60 is thicker then SAE50, the SAE60 is too thick in my opinion.

Quality wise, it can be argued but Motul 300v on paper is a higher spec product then the Millers.

Cheers

Guy

Just checked your website and you do Motul 300V Competiton 15W-50 in 4 litre packs at a good price. Annoyingly the EJ20 engine takes between 4.5 and 5litres (inc. filter capacity)... Therefore, I don't suppose you do this oil in 1 litre bottles too?

If not, do you know where I could get some, also at a good price?

Thanks.

It doesnt come in 1ltrs, but it does come in 2ltr. I can do you a deal on 6ltr.

Alternatively you can look at something that comes in a 5ltr tub such as the Silkolene Pro R or the Gulf Competition.

Cheers

I'm running stock EJ20G@350BHP that has already done 180.000 KM without any problems. During the first 80K I've used 10-40 semi-syntc oil.(This is what manual suggests) For the last 100K I'm using 10-60 Castrol Edge(before edge there was castrol tsw 10-60) without problem. Even no little oil consumption!!

I know in the past that the oilman was not suggesting 10W60 oil because of the some heat related issues.

cheers

That is very old stock. We don't have anything like that, even in our odd and ends shelf of discontinued products

The 10w-60 is a good oil and it's very thick, so there won't be much consumption, but it may not flow quickly enough to help dissipate heat, which is a function of the oil. You may find the engine runs a bit cooler with a 10w-50, but if you are in Turkey or Florida, the ambient air temperature may make the oil a bit warmer than in a UK car, so the flow rate will be okay

lol cheers.

If oil is left for ages - but the cap seal still intact - then does it 'go off'? (akin to how petrol can go stale and lose its octane rating, over time).

Or would it be fine?

Most oils will do 5 years sealed. Sometimes the addatives drop out when standing for a long time. I am informed a good shake will do the trick.

ok just to get in on this disscusion.

is castrol magnatec 10w 40 any good for my pretty much standard 97 sti that gets driven hardish on the road but will never see a track.

i have litres of this stuff at my disposal so would be handy if i could use it.
