I still have one of those money box things - 9 - in working order. Must have had it for about 55 years Designed to take old pennies, you flipped a button and the coin was swallowed.

I can also recall some songs from prep school but words changed since. De Campdown Races is one. Also kids nursery rhymes. And of course the black & white minstrels but I suspect this would make one cringe a bit if it was shown now.

Well since Grandpa was buying the animal he got to suggest the name and as it was a black lab , he wanted 'Darky '
Eventually we settled on Blacky because the dog is ..um black

Had to when the cashier called out the name for it to be collected

I would personally pull the trigger to get rid of these utter idiots who have determined what actually constitutes "racism" these days.
I do hope this is an ironic post.

You really don't think that white people blacking up with fat lips called the Black and White Minstrel show might just be a touch patronising if not down right racist.

I really don't think it is necessaryto be over sensitive over some of the words which can be used and are not intended to offend. A child for example might love a toy golliwog for itself and I cant see that should be a problem from any side.

The PC Plonkers have become so manic about not offending a foreigner that they have managed to make everyone unnecessarily frightend of using words which used to be a normal part of the language. Most of those who are imagined to be offended can't understand what all the fuss is about.

It never bothered me to be called a Pom, Limey, Honkie or Kipper etc. just gave back as good as I got and it was all a big joke anyway.

Les

What matters of course is how the terms in question are used, if they are intended to cause offence then that is a different matter of course.

Not in the slightest. It was a great show, extremely popular, and no one complained.

It may be that with an inherently racist society that no-one felt empowered to complain.

Rather than argue the politics a much simpler test could be used.

Imagine that President Obama and Nelson Mandela were attending a state dinner with the Queen or the PM. A very real possibility.

Now ask yourself whether the an evening with the Black and White Minstrels would be appropriate entertainment? Having white men blacked up to sing and dance to Southern slave songs.

I suspect it would go down a storm!!

Well, I'm sure they'd prefer it to a show by Horne & Corden or the currently ubiquitous Michael McIntyre.

Since the performers would be showing how good all those songs and the music was and how well they used to be performed, I bet they would all enjoy it.

When I was young a golliwog was used as an educational tool....

I didn't see a single "non-white ethnic minority community member" till I was six years old.

But being brought up proper, I can't see why a persons skin colour should be reason to treat them differently.

Things are a bit different now !

dunx

P.S. I watched the B&W minstrels as a wee kid, that was "our" version of Big Brother....

I agree with Leslie, seems like you cant speak nowadays without offending someone, something. It makes talking so difficult now, as you've almost got to filter out everything you say, for anything that might cause offence. I cant help but feel this PC culture has ruined our country and made the subject of race / culture and creed paramount in our minds. This results in more hatred, anger and racism, as it feels your country just isnt yours anymore and is being molded by indviduals now dont even belong here.

What I also cant understand, is that these people who leave thier country of birth, and head to the UK and then complain when here. Obviously by leaving thier country, indicates they wish to live by our rules / beliefs. However, when here, they then try to make thier new home, like the one they've just left ? So why live in the first place. And why do we let ourselves change ?

As a hosting country, we then convert ourselves to suit them and thier needs and slowly loose focus of what being British is all about. On the reverse, I leave Britian and go to these different countries, and see that we as a nation arent liked, if I were to ask for social handouts I would be told to f* off and if I asked for grants to build a Christen Church, would be shot.

As for the black and white minstrels, white people have the same issue with clowns. They wear white make up, but we dont see that as racist. I know thats a poor example, but we could, in our rights, start to say that clowns are racist against whites.

Im looking forward to when I can start using the "Is it becuase Im white ?"

100% absolutely not. Racist. FFS. Are you one of the people who makes these pathetic rules? Trout most of your posts seem well balanced - i can't believe your naivety on this subject. I'm assuming you're under 30, right?
