Positive Action
#63
I've read this thread and the one that was started yesterday on more or less the same subject.
I think writing to the PM is very commendable and yes I would have no problem putting my name on this letter.
However I think you all need to understand that currently there is a lot of money being thrown at Crime Prevention both by the Youth Jutice Board and the Home Office. Lots of local councils have and are currently putting in place some very commendable crime prevention schemes which take the form of restorative justice, youth activity schemes, and mentoring work, all of these projects are being funded by the government.
If you really want to help and do something positive then crime prevention comes down to education and education takes time and volunteers are needed to work with local projects. Get in touch with your local police authority or your local councils to see if there are any schemes that need active volunteers.
Getting criminals off the streets is a major task and not one that can be cured overnight or by a letter to the PM (wouldn't we wish).
Crime prevention starts with us... ensure you are less vulnerable, drive with your doors locked and windows shut, reverse into parking spaces so you can get away quickly and easily. If you're female then ensure that there is nothing obvious in the car that suggests your gender to an opportunist. Have you got a good car alarm, engine immobiliser, disc loc (all deterents) sadly I can't comment on what you would do if someone broke into your house to steal your car keys, but I suppose just be extra observant and try and notice is someone is following you home or watching your house.
On the roads a tip learnt from Dick Grimes, always stop your car so you can clearly see the back wheels of the car in front.. in an emergency this gives you an out.
A letter I doubt will make much of difference getting involved locally will.

Corr what a thread!
I've read intently through this thing and certainly agree something needs to be done.
I watched with interest the interview on BBC SE with Pete Croney with regard performance car and car jacking - only problem was my wife watching too.
When it finished she suggested (seriously) that I ought to think about selling the scoob. No dont start larfing - this is a perfectly reasonable reaction from someone who may be driving a car that is a more likely target for these kind of criminals.
Something needs to be done and done asap.
Writing letters to you MP - yes they'll probably get the message that their constituents are concerned about this - likey to do anything - no as theres nothing in it for them - with the numbers you are like to be talking in most cases its unlikely to affect their reelection.
I think the key to this is publicity.
The idea of "invading" the center of london with hundreds of scoobies would certainly get the message across and for sure get the attention of the media. Only thing is I wouldnt want to pay a fiver to get into the city!

Where did the idea of invading centre of London come from, or is it your idea ? £5 congestion charges are months away anyway
Not sure if this would be a good idea as the media portrayal would focus on the boy racer element rather than the serious crime and inaction concerns.
I've got a wife and two young kids and this is scaring the life out of my wife, even though I've issued her with instructions to just give them the keys if the scumbags come knocking.

Count me in for both the letter to the PM and the cru*... I mean protest. If it worked for the truckers picketting about the high diesal price, it should work for us scooby owners (in theory).
As the man says, but also put in "consequences" if this situation is not rectified (ie. homemade security devices).
Key phrases like "the general public will not much longer put up with being victimised for trival speeding offences when violent gangs of criminals are preying on law abiding members of the public in their own homes" should help paint the picture we are interested in displaying.....

I'm definitely in. Along with the letters to be sent, can we not contact the BBC and get them to take interest as a follow on from the piece on BBC London news yesterday.
I am sure they will be interested if it is seen that their piece of journalism has sparked Joe Public into standing up about this sort of thing. Then it might have more impact.

The last post on this topic was 10 days ago - indeed the subject of the armed robberies just a couple of weeks ago seems to have disappeared from these forums just as suddenly as it appeared.
Do we all have such short memories?
Alpine: any news on that web site and letter you were going to do? I'd be happy to assist if you don't have the time. Please let me know.
Andy.

"Do we all have such short memories?"
maybe the reason is that it is not that big a problem- its nice and exciting for TV so it gets some press but how many people have been car jacked??? in the last 10 days im sure a load of people have died on the roads but no one is writting to the pm about that.
said before but i'll say again, car jacking/breaking in for your keys is very, very bad and the ppl who do it should be punished big time BUT- it is rare compared to other crime and the car jackings that leave ppl hurt are even rarer.
if you were the pm with all the things on your desk that are wrong with the country today you think you'd worry about this?
crime is a problem and a protest on that generic issue might be of use (although i think ppl are aware of the problem) but a protest based on this:
"Ok we're hearing a lot about Subaru drivers being car-jacked and attacked in their own homes for their keys." is a bit pointless cause it is not backed up by the facts.

I'm in - but just post the letter here and we'll modify it and send it to our local MP.
I was also thinking about writing to by local Borough Police Commander, the Divisional Commander and Sir Peter Stevens, the Met head honcho about this - if enough of us do make a fuss, I think they *will* take notice.
Key phrases like "the general public will not much longer put up with being victimised for trival speeding offences when violent gangs of criminals are preying on law abiding members of the public in their own homes" should help paint the picture we are interested in displaying.....
