Ameteur Radio - whats the point
Noun 1. poor fish - a person who is not very bright; "The economy, stupid!"
Whereas:
geek (gk)
n. Slang
1. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.
Some see it as a complement, whereas your phrase is just a common insult
Look if were going to get ******* technical about radios the I would class myself as a radio professional not an amateur.
My kit bounces signals off satellites in geostationary orbits (that's 36,000km away, there and back it's more or less equivalent to twice round the earth), it does this from fast moving platforms (i.e. aircraft, yes Doppler is compensated for!), and can achieve data rates approaching 512kbps. To do this we use complicated digital modulation techniques, forward error correction, and adaptive signal processing to cope with the difficulties of the aeronautical environment. HAM radio is a bit of an archaic joke compared to this. Hence I see no point in why I should have any interest in it or why anyone else would want to. But each to their own and all that. I'll stick to developing communications on the leading edge thanks
You enjoy your shed!

You enjoy your shed! What you do is most impressive of course and would also be an interesting subject for discussion to most Hams of course. You must be terribly clever.
How much is your equipment worth, and how many Hams could afford to get into your kind of radio communications?
The clue is in the name "Radio Amateur" when you think about it, we do the best we can with comparatively limited resources and build home made equipment out of whatever bit of ex commercial stuff we can find. Its a bit like when I went racing, I could not afford to buy a full blown racer on my salary so I built my own for a fraction of the cost and managed to stay with most of the cars owned by rich fellows! Did not matter that my car was not as shiny as theirs!
You might do well to remember that in the early days, Hams were allocated the lower frequency bands because the authorities thought that they were useless for communications. The hams of that time went on to prove what they could achieve in world wide comms. through their own resourceful experiments and have also invented various modes of communication which are used commercially today.
While you are bound up with your very expensive and specialised equipment, it would do you no harm to accept what Hams are attempting on stuff that cost peanuts rather than writing us off as unimportant in such a superior manner.
The word is "shack" rather than "shed" by the way, You might as well get the terms right if you are going to attempt to belittle us and our hobby!
