Games console reliability?
For me the PS3 wins the stakes.... Sure the PS3 has taken a long while to get running but now it is up there with the Xbox for games as MS really did hit the floor running!!
The PS3 is a far more powerful machine, the only problem with it is, it's far more complicated to write for so programmers haven't managed to utilize it's fully Graphical potential as yet but it still looks as good, if not nicer that an XBOX360 (TV dependant)
the PS3 controller is a nicer controller and if you owned a PS2 you will be familiar with it.
Yes updates are frequent on the PS3 but they really do add functionality to the system, they're not updates for updates sake.... the major down fall of this is if you just want to pick the system up and play but there is an update pending you won't be able to play on line or anything like that until the update has happened (very annoying)
Game updates happen a fair bit as well, not so bad because it keeps your games current and improved but some are large and if you have a small internet connection you could suffer.
The PS3 has everything built in to it, no cocking around £299 for a console with everything aint bad, and it won't fail.
Xbox360 value for money???? not really, £209 if you buy a box in direct comp with a PS3 + battery pack for controller £12 + online play £40 gold membership, £55 wireless adpater so not a great deal as everyone makes out!
Blu-ray player is one of the best blu-ray players money can buy at the moment as tried and tested so people saying it's cheap **** in the PS£ are talking tosh!
I do believe that more people have xbox360's so playing online is more varied
Oh and to top ot off everytime you put the 360 on it will remind you of what your mums old hoover used to sound like untill you turn the TV volume up to 5 million dB, they are loud beasts and that's without the extra cooling fans you really should put on it!
Both consoles are good for game playing, the PS3 is just a better piece of kit physically!

Totally agree
Why pay out for an xbox only to keep having to send it back , ask this question to the xbox appreciation club :- how many of you have had to send your xbox back cause it is ****e and broke down
I've had my Elite for 18 months now and never had any problems with it. I think the more recently manufactured models are less prone to hardware failure than the earlier ones. I use it as a media player too (over a cable, not wireless) & find it perfectly adequate for films, music & photos. The Xbox Live subscription may cost money but I think its good value for the use it gets in my house & the content you can get is really good.
I've no doubt the PS3 is a great machine & will probably come into its own in coming years but I wouldn't buy one now I have the Xbox.

1 Elite bought when it launched never returned ( played a fair bit but not as much as the launch unit)
some say I'm lucky ... maybee. Point is I own both and not a Fanboy of either. For my Xbox vs PS3 opinion you can look up any number of threads on here. I just can't stand some of the BS that gets passed as fact on this subject.

Neither my PS3 or Xbox can handle proper HD video over wireless. Hence why I have them both wired

I've had my PS3 fixed twice. Once when it stopped reading discs, and another time when the HD stopped working. Worrying when you consider how little I use it in comparison to the 360. So, they are not immune to failure either

No it's not
They generally look identical, however there are numerous multi-platform games where the 360 version is superior (better frame rates, less bugs etc).
Mine has failed twice
Don't want wireless (see other posts). Online gold subscription can be found for much less than that (aorund £29) and it is a far superior service than PSN. If a battery goes in the controller (which they do after a while), then a replacement battery for the 360 controller is about £6. You have to buy a completely new PS3 controller at £30-40.
I was using my PS3 for blu-ray playback, but recvently switched to using a Sony BDPS350 standalone player instead (£170). The picture is better both on blu-ray, but especially on upscaled dvd, it loads discs quicker, the unit is quieter during playback, and it will play multi-region dvds (which the PS3 won't). The PS3 doesn't do a bad job, but a decent standalone player wipe the floor with it.
No need for extra fans. Installing games to the HD removes much of this noise. Not an issue for me
Not in my experience it's not

but it still looks as good, if not nicer that an XBOX360 (TV dependant)

You can't be watching full HD then. The bitrate of HD is higher than that of a wireless connection, and thus impossible to transmit. Blu-ray bitrates can peak up to 40Mbs. Most wireless (54g) connections can manage around 11Mps.

The PS3 doesn't support N wireless
. The only way to do it would be to get an N wireless bridge, and then link to the consoles using ethernet from that bridge. Either way, it still makes the built in wireless useless

+ have to be happy go lucky, drive a Subaru which will inevitably blow up at some pointyour reading expertise seem to be lacking some what... I gave a good and bad account from personal experience of both consoles, no fanboy bollox going on....... an opinion was asked for and he got mine, I have nothing against the 360, it is a good console just prefer the PS3
On the whole I would suggest you play on both consoles and make your own mind up mate, you're not going to get a sensible conclusion on here!

I'm not getting at you just the fact that people rant about one console or the other and pass opinions off as facts.

720p, 1080i etc can peek at up to 19Mbs, which while less that blu-ray, is still far greater than the 360 or PS3 wireless cards can handle. Of course it is possible to encode files with lower bit rates, but then you start losing quality.
That has little to do with the bit rate. You can have a high quality / high bit rate file at that resolution, or a low quality / low bit rate file. Both are same resolution, but will look very different. Personally I don't see the point of investing in HD stuff if you are going to compromise the picture by using low bit rates
it will stream 1280x688 with ease

Its like the Spectrum vs C64 debates all over again, I have both, cant say I can express a preference, both are great in their own ways.
To be honest, with the 360, I just buy a new one when it breaks, then sent the old one back, they are only £100 or so for the basic one.
PS3 is deffo shinier, s for more powerful, still waiting for some evidence of this, GTA4 is better on the 360, kicking myself for giving my brother my vopy on the 360 when I donated him my repaired 360.
The Wii has not been switched on this year.....

wasnt it down to Sony refusing to shell out for the rumble rights..
one of the reasons that went against it, when i was looking to buy.

I don't know if you've made your mind up yet James, but an Xbox Elite can be had from LittlewoodsDirect for £179.
At the checkout the reduction in VAT is applied which pretty much covers the postage.
Add in the code xx710 for an extra 10% discount and the total including delivery is £161.63.

So do PS3 owners
No, it's called an opinion, I don't like the 360 controllers either, I believe we are allowed to have an opinion? Surely the same accusation could be made of anyone who prefers 360 controllers!
Fair enough, but MS aren't exactly perfect in everything they do! People who live in glass houses.......
Well, it has been outclassed now, and for cheaper too, so you have a point there. However, you do get a games console too, so for people who don't want separate pieces of hardware cluttering up their lounge, it's quite important. Even if you don't want Blu-Ray, not having to have a separate DVD player is still something.
Much quieter? Sheesh, they could be one fifth as quiet and still be noisy!
Ok, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I don't think many people would argue that the PS3 is more asthetically pleasing, and again, for alot of people who have this thing in their lounge, not up in their bedroom, then that is important to a degree.
Your comment suggests that the PS3 is simply a shiny thing with no content, but that patently isn't true.
I don't doubt you are not getting at the poster, but your comments sound just a fanboyish as you make his out to be!
I agree it is amusing (not annoying IMO) that people do pass off opinion as fact, but that is equally true of most comments about the 360!
Long may they both survive, driving the competition that benefits us all!

I's said it before and I'll say it again. I'm not a fanboy of either console and have both in my Living room. The look of the console isn't a factor for me but If forced for an opinion they are both ugly lumps of plastic ( just the Ps3 is bettter at catching dust)
controller is a factor of which one you use the most ,given time anyone can convert from loving one to loving the other.
as you say geezer long live both because we are getting a better generation this time round because of the closer split in sales. Now if GT5 and Forza 3 would just get a release date we could have a proper forum moan and graon session.

Doh! Of course!
I'll give it an update tonight and see if it works
