Tony, I gather that the people on the waiting list already were not being brought forward significantly, much to their annoyance, but cars were available to new buyers for earlier delivery than some who had their names on the waiting list (and have paid deposits, even for non-nav models).

That's what I mean. Get a good used one and maybe they won't drop much further, whereas a new GTR certainly will, and maybe a lot!
Spooky Mulder, yes excellent link. That's what I mean by it maybe being a rumour blown out of proportion. The internet is like that. Less than 1% of cars affected is not an epidemic, especially when most owners will surely have launched it a few times (like Hitler did ) so perhaps entirely predictable (by Nissan).

Is that possibly because those who have paid deposits have contracts at the lower price?
Increased cost easier to swallow with earlier availability.
Hoppy has a point. The market for 997s (for example) is greater and therefore residuals will remain stronger long term. GTRs have a much smaller and more specialist market, although there will be less cars around.
Bottom line, this is not a great time to buy anything without decent discount. Nissan GB dealers won't talk discount if they don't know margins.
As for the gearbox, if the issues are that great, as Deep has said there is every likleyhood that Nissan will find a fix whilst the car is within warranty.
If not, just kill it within the warranty period and sell it with a new 'box.

I ordered my GTR about this time last year and was given a first quarter of 2010 delivery. I did the Silverstone day in the summer and the car was wicked. I'm not too concerned with tranny issues as its under warranty for three years and I don't intend negating my warranty by launching. It was fast enough without it. I ordered the sat nav model hence the delay.

John B,
I'm surprised you hadn't thought of the litchfeld Impreza type 20. Just about everyone who has driven one seems to feel they are a huge improvement over
any new gen Scooby and not that far from a GT-R. PLus I must assume
it might actually be better able to handle narrow roads than Godzilla. I'd
love to see a back to back test of a type 20 vs GT-R.
PS For some years have appreciated your thoughtful and well informed missives!

I think comparing the Type 20 with a GTR is a bit like the poster who is trying to compare an FRS to a 911. Totally different propositions for totally diffferent reasons.
Even allowing for that the GTR would eat the T20 for breakfast and spit out the tyres that got stuck between it's teeth.
Look at the GTRs 'Ring time and then wonder how many cars the T20 would have to be faster than to get even close...
...997 Turbo, GT3RS, Carrera GT, GT2, Zonda F...
...the T20 would not know which direction they had gone...
...unless the GTR claim was somehow exaggerated

My Evo's cornering abilities are beyond my needs or desires for road use, and the use of its acceleration is limited by visibility and not scaring other road users (the closing speed during a big overtake can be ridiculous, so that you seriously hold back for fear of someone you're overtaking simply not seeing you and pulling out). The benefits of a GTR are a nicer image, 6 cylinders, gearbox, refinement, downsides are the maintenance/depreciation cost, gearbox, size. I doubt it would actually be more fun or quicker across country as this is already limited by safety. The Evo has nearly 20% less power, but also 20% less weight. With 140 BHP less it is 1 second slower than a 997 turbo in an 85 second lap, with mine halving the power gap and the 997 turbo's gains being in only the straights I think it would match it now, and another 100 BHP is easily available if I want it along with another 500 RPM lag. I'm keeping it but just quietening it down a bit.
Of couse the GTR can be modified, but I wouldn't with those plasma liners and gearbox and the price/availability of spare parts at this stage in the car's cycle.
I can't see the Type 20 being an advantage except being a bit quieter.

Hi, we have a GTR and an Evo8 in the family....I've done about 3K miles of driving in the GTR across Europe, and the ride, in my opinion, is appalling, and, despite what the press says, in the real world, is bad enough to detrimentally affect the handling.
It was being thrown off line in long, very high speed sweeping bends when it crossed joining strips in the road. This is at approx. 170 mph, when the suspension should be hitting things like this hard enough to supply some compression. It simply made me nervous in the way that something like an Audi R8 wouldn't have.
If you're interested in one as an ownership prospect, make every effort to drive one under as many different conditions as possible before you commit. It makes my E8 with Bilsteins seem like a limo!

I noticed a NEW black edition UK car (in red) for May delivery, 0 miles, for sale for..........
£50,000 of your GBP.!!!
In the Sunday Times 'In Gear' section, tiny little advert, looks like a private seller.

Maybe I was unfair to suggest the GTr would be out of the T20s league...
The boys at Porsche, obviously stunned that the Nissan GT-R achieved a claimed Nurburgring lap time of 7:29 — faster than either their 911 Turbo or GT2 — decided to do a little testing of their own. Using a stock GT-R sourced from the States, Porsche's 'Ring expert was able to perform a best lap of just 7:54, easily beaten by both the 911 Turbo (7:38) and GT2 (7:34). The results were no surprise to Porsche, considering that its cars have more power yet weigh less than the GT-R, leading the engineers in Stuttgart to claim Nissan was running its tests using race tires.
In polite German fashion, the Porsche folks state they aren't trying to start a battle, just satisfy their own concerns. "The Nissan is a good car. I don't want to make anything bad with my words," August Achleitner, the 911 product chief for Porsche, told a CarsGuide reporter. At the time of this writing, Nissan hasn't responded to Porsche's claims of foul play, but we're interested to see if a mea culpa is forthcoming or if Nissan will provide irrefutable proof of Godzilla's triumph. Stay tuned.
...The T20 should be able to get pretty close to that 'Ring time

I have just re-read the evo GTR v. GT3. Based on this - which one would you buy?
There is also a video showing the result.
I know which one I want
Porsche v. Datsun
