1. Porsche Badge over a Nissan. Try explaining to a potential new mate that you drive a Nissan GT-R. Geek mode on "It's actually faster round the Nurburbring than a Porsche 911 Turbo you know. It's got clever diffs and everything". Then watch her walk off and suck some other blokes ****. To be honest, I'd rather not have that type of gold digger in my life. If thats the type of woman you prefer, thats your choice, Mr Lover.
2. Hmmmm, not sure about that. It'll chew tyres, drink fuel, and need looking after just like a Porsche. But as it's only a "Datsun", you wont be paying the vastly over inflated Porsche "badge" prices for things like servicing yadda yadda.
3. See point 1. Plus, anyone other than a racing driver will never get one or the other round any track any quicker. I personally prefer AWD to RWD, but I'll agree to disagree on that.
4. You're right it doesn't. Brownie points to you, well observed. Debate FAIL on your behalf.
5. You've taken some drug, yes? As per no. 4, but I'm not a badge snob. Just because it has a prestige badge on it, certainly doesn't mean me, myself and I will have it just because of this.

Porsche vs. Nissan, badge snobbery.....who cares. If you are bothered about what someone can infer about you by the brand of car that you drive, you have a lack of confidence in yourself. If you chat girls up by talking about your cars then this indeed confirms my initial thoughts of a lack of confidence in yourself as well, talking about cars is not a way to score women!! There are far more effective means of doing this!
I personally can have either car, I choose the Nissan because it’s a superb motor and the ability to tune and tailor the car to my specifics is exponentially cheaper than the equivalent work on a 911. At the end of the day the reason why you would have a 911 over a GTR is your choice, at the end of the day they are both great cars, they will both get you from A to B faster than most other things out there and they both will give you a smile when you’re having some fun!
Gearbox issues exist with any motor stressed to its limits. If you are pushing more out of the car strengthened gear sets are already available and reasonably priced. If you’re not modifying your motor then you're covered by the warranty, which will give you no exposure to financing a new item!

My 2p's worth:-
Don't think the badge should come into it (unless your a badge snob). The GTR is an awesome piece of kit, but for me, with a price tag like that, and regardless of performance, I would need to like the look of the car too, and personally, I don't!
Whilst you would assume that a Nissan, like any Japanese car would be reliable, there is already stories of discontent, and that's on new cars. What are they going to be like when they're 5 or 6 years old? Parts for this car will be expensive! Scary!!!
Like some others here, I don't think that in today's environment that any car will hold it's value like it used to. This car may fair better than some, but it will still lose a packet IMHO.
The only advantage that is clear from the Porker camp, is that it's more of a known quantity in terms of reliability.
But at the end of the day it's a matter of what you prefer. If I was given a choice between those 2, I would take the Porker, but for the reasons above and not the badge. That said, I would buy neither as I prefer many other cars in front of these 2.

Deep, I don't know whether it will turn out like an E60 M5 gearbox issue, but I think it is fair to say that nearly all DSG/SMG type gearboxes have had considerably more issues than traditional manual/auto. I know I would rather have a port injection, normally aspirated petrol, with a good traditional auto, with conventional suspension, non-ceramic brakes and no excess of German electronics in a car that I would want to run out of warranty. I think we have a ticking time bomb with recent technologies which will cause more trouble than they solve.
In terms of badges, I'd take the Nissan as it is less flash than the Porsche. It would tend to get people's backs up less in the middle of a recession?

Its a way of saying, I have made it, but not everybody wants to shout that out once they actually have (made it)

Me neither. Maybe I am a bit of a Badge snob. I'd certainly always have a Porsche over a Nissan. But I've wanted a 911 Turbo since I was a young boy. I'm more wanting to own my dream car rather than thinking I'll get shagged driving a 911 Turbo about.
I'd buy a Ferrari or Lamborghini for that.

There are probably only two people on this thread that really could afford a 911 or GT-R (no I'm NOT including myself!) and they seem to not give a stuff about the badge.
Whereas the "dreamers" insist it has to be a Porsche.
Interesting...

well with a budget of £15K, I genuinely toyed between a boxster, an older 911, the impreza, audi A6
before buying the impreza: major factor being the space I need in a car, secondly- every **** has an audi.
boxster will always be- never a 911. An older 911 again is just that: just an old 911.
and I love the scooby and still wouldn't change my mind.
and if you need a car to get a gf, well there really is no hope for you then, is there !!!!!!!!
the gtr is clearly something from another planet entirely: respect it as such.

I'd love to be able to buy new, but as I'm only 34, I don't think I'm doing to badly, what with being Mortgage free (paid off Feb 2008), Golf GT Sport (paid for) and looking to buy a second hand 911 in a few months time.
I guess if we can't afford to buy the car being discussed in a thread, we should keep out then.
Stilover........... Dreamer apparently.

Now Stilover - methinks that is the sort of thread I'd get battered for writing...
If I was a selfish git, then yes, I could afford a new 911T or a GT-R but I have a wife and kid to look after plus we don't own a gaff so savings are for either that or just as a safety net. Nice to have zero debt and a big "net" though.
However just a SMALL amount of it towards a nice car (albeit with four proper seats) might not be too missed...!
I'd love to drive a GT-R but have a sneaking feeling that I would prefer to own a 911T. I'm afraid it would have to be a 997 though.

I own a 911 (997S) and I would not give the Nissan a second look really. I do like the GT-R dont get me wrong, but would I buy one, with real money.. er no.
There are lots of reasons why, but on the whole it would come down to drive (not a fan of 4x4 or turbos), the interior and the overall package.
I dont think I would buy a 911 Turbo either, I would have a GT3 thanks.

Well, I'm also a 'dreamer'. (not)
I could afford both right now but as it is I'll get my 996TT in April.
I don't need a new car as it'll be used as a third car just for the odd weekend blast so absolutely no point buying a new one.
I do like the GTR but I've always been fond of the Porsche heritage and driving experience so that's what I'll have.
No badge snobbery here. I mean, I drive a BMW and a Mitsubishi
Mattee - have to agree, GT3 in viper green is the danglies! (but I need rear seats occasionally )
