Default Oil for GHD

Hi, I am about to buy a second hand 2011 Impreza GHD, 60000miles, with the diesel 150bhp engine, what oil grade and brand would you recommend for it? Subaru uses 5W-30 as standard I think, but would it be safer to go 5W-40 considering in Italy it can be quite hot in summer?
I might consider some light tuning like a Litchfield-kind upgrade to 180bhp, would that change the oil grade recommendation?
Cheers!

Hi Marcos

As it stands, I would use a 5w-30 ACEA C2 or C3 oil, but if you modify it and find that it starts burning a lot of oil or the pressure warning light starts coming on, go for a ACEA C3 5w-40.

Thanks, is there any brand you would recommend in particular among 5W-30 and 5W-40 ACEA C2/C3 oils?
I used to use 5W-40 Millers CFS on my WRX and have been satisfied with it, would that oil be unappropriate on the GHD? Wonder if a triple ester formulation could be good on a diesel engine...
Cheers,
Marcos

Hi

I assume your car has a DPF, in which case you need to use a ACEA C2 or C3 oil, like the ones I mentioned above. The CFS doesn't meet those specs, but their XF and EE oils via those links do. If you want an ester based oil that is DPF compatible, go for the Red Line Euro Series stuff or Fuchs Titan Race Pro C3.

Cheers

Hello Oilman,
Going to change the gearbox and diff oil on my 2005 WRX running 280/301 and 80,000 miles.
From what I have read I don't need a LS oil for the diff.
I'm a bit of a millers fan, is this oil ok?
Millers Oils CRX 75w-90 NT+ Competition full synthetic transmission oil (2017)

Thanks

Default Oil recommendation

Hey oilman,
I have a 06 Sti
upgraded uppipe & downpipe/full exhaust
bov
tmic
cold air intake
stage 2 map
some other smaller engine upgrades
she's pumping out about 400whp
Hasn't ran in awhile but looking to get back on the road. The oil in use is almost depleted. Last thing in it I believe was 5w 30 syn. Looking to run it on the street for the weekends. Running it hard from time to time. I live in socal as well so mainly warm weather. Any idea what my best options are?

Hi

I would say a good 5w-40 would probably be the way to go, unless you are getting high (over 125C) oil temps, then a 10w-50 is the best choice.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS Nanodrive, Motul Sport/300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. They are all really good oils and up to dealing with the harsh conditions of trackdays.

Cheers

Default My96

After a bit of advice for engine and gearbox/diff oil for a my96 wrx, running around 300bhp. Minimal mods but it's used every day, mainly short trips to and from work (9 miles each way). Will be used all over winter etc.
Guessing a 10w40? But what gearbox oil (and quantity) as there seems to be so many slightly different variants of the 75w90, even from the same manufacturer?

Thanks
Pez

Hi Pez

I would use a 10w-40 in the engine.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-657-10w-40.aspx

The best ones are the Gulf Competition, Motul 300V, Fuchs Pro R, Red Line and Millers CFS. As a cheaper alternative the Fuchs Syn MC, Gulf Tec Plus, Valvoline Durablend/Maxlife, Castrol Magnatec, Shell HX7, Motul 6100 and Millers CSS/EE/Trident are good choices.

You need a 75w-90 GL5 oil for the gearbox and diff.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-90-gear-oil.aspx

The Millers CRX NT, Motul Gear 300, Red Line 75w-90NS, Amsoil Severe Gear and Gulf Competition are ideal as top end options. The Millers TRX Synthetic/EE Nanodrive, Mobil SHC, Castrol Syntrax Universal Plus and Valvoline Synpower TDL are good, but a step down from the top oils. Fuchs Gear Syn, Motul Motylgear, Millers TRX Semi and Castrol Universal are good, cheaper options.

Cheers

Hi Oilman,

I just purchased an STI Blobeyes 2005 Wide Track Type UK, with Prodrive Performance Pack, (75k Miles).

Which Engine oil would you recommend? It is going to be my daily drive, no track usage but I like to push it sometimes.
I would like to go for Mobil1 5W30.

I also would like to replace Gearbox oil and Diff oil.

If I am right, rear diff capacity is 0.8L and my gearbox (6 speed) is 4.1L, right?
How much is it for the engine?

What is you opinion about engine flush additives?

Laurent

Hi Laurent

With the PPP and occasional hard use, I would probably go for a 5w-40, unless you are somewhere cold.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT+, Motul Sport/300V, Red Line and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XF Longlife, Castrol Edge/Magnatec, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

The Motul Gear 300 is ideal for the gearbox

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-899-motu...-diff-oil.aspx

The diff needs a SAE90 LSD oil, like the Fuchs Titan Race Gear 90LS, Castrol Axle Z or Motul 90PA.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-679-sae-90-gear-oils.aspx

Flushes can be too harsh, but a detergent based one, like the Millers Engine Flush is a fairly safe option.

Cheers

Hi Oilman,

Thanks for the reply, I am based in the Northamptonshire. Maybe not what you would call "cold"?
How much quantity do I need for the engine please?

For curiosity, front diff, central diff and gearbox are sharing the same oil, right?
Rear diff has only 0.8L and no radiator, therefore it is much more subject to overheat, right? This is why it needs different spec?

Hi Laurent

No, not that cold then, so I would go for a 5w-40. You need 5L for the engine.

The front diff, gearbox and centre diff share the same oil, and due to the diff in the centre diff, the Gear 300 is the option that works best.

The rear diff is a plated LSD and that requires LSD specific friction modifiers, that's why it needs the different oil.

Cheers

Hi tim, tried to DM but not sure it went through.

Just picked up a classic w reg turbo 2000 at 160,000 miles.

Sounds like it may have a bit of piston slap at cold start.

Would you suggest a 5w40 engine oil?

Hi

Sorry, only just saw the notification.

With the slap, I would use 10w-40 rather than 5w-40, it's more likely to reduce the slap.

Hi Oilman.

What oil would you recommend for a 2010 hatch? Fully forged, induction kit, dump valve, soon to be exhaust, running around 350hp.

Mainly used for spirited drives and a little bit of commuting, maybe the odd 1/4 mile?

Thanks in advance

In that case, I would go for a 10w-50

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx

They are all really good oils to pick from and any of them will be fine for it.

If you do get an oil temp gauge at some point, if it stays under about 125C and doesn't burn a lot, a 10w-40 would be the best choice.

Cheers

Hi guys, new to all things oil. I noticed my mechanic put 15w 40 in my 2001 bugeye. I don't quite understand the reasoning behind this, I'm thinking of perhaps switching to a 10w 40? Temperature here gets to around 35C in summer and occasionally dips below 0C in winter, though generally is between 5-20 most of the time. I'm looking for a really good oil. Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi

15w-40 tends to be the cheap option, so it's probably basic oil.

I would switch to a 5w-40 or 10w-40.

Cheers

Yes, I bet he had too much 15W/40 lying around because he bought too much by mistake. You tend to put in old oil burning vans.
