Steve,
What OS you running? I know that there are issues when running Win2K with an Athlon and a VIA chipset. The latest boards tend to use an AMD North Bridge Chipset and a newer VIA South and that seems to cure the problems.
I've got an XP1700 on a Gigabyte GA-7DXR, 512MB DDR Ram with an ELSA Gladiac 511 GeForce 2 MX400 64MB running Win2K with no problems.
So perhaps it's your motherboard?
Just a thought,
Matt

Guys,
Found this last night http://www.meshplc.co.uk/newsite/new...xp1700plus.htm
What'd you reckon? Seems a good spec system for not a bad price..using an ASUS mainboard, only slight downer I can see is that its only got 2 memory slots and ther are both used with 2*256.
Would probably upgrade to a Mitsubishi 920 monitor and the 5.1 speakers.
Worth it?
John

i am currently able to work normally having tweaked the bios so the pc is now running 100 FSB with 13 multiplier rather than 133 FSB and 11 multiplier
so summat is up.
abit kg7, athalon 1700+
gotta see wot the guy i got it from wants to do....but at least i can now play CS again
if only i had a decent internet connection

Unless you're a real Photoshop junkie, 512MB will suffice for a home PC for 12 months IMO.
I've got 512MB on this PC (my home PC) running Win 2000 Pro. With Oulook 2000, a few IE windows and other stuff like CuteFTP open, I very rarely go below 256MB of memory Free. Might drop further when playing UT but I'm not looking a perf mon so can't tell.

Steve if you're running an abit board and you are having to tweak the individual settings for cpu/fsb then it sounds to me like the bios is out of date. All of the KG7-Raid boards I built recently needed flashing to a new bios revision to correctly autodetect the XP chips. In fact there was an even later bios release just for the 1900 chip.
I have abit KG7-Raid with a 1900, geforce3 Ti500 and SB Audigy card - probably the worst known offenders of "getting it stable" and it works a treat. *WILL NOT WORK UNDER WIN-XP THO* !!
BUT BUT BUT for win2k I have to install the correct drivers in the correct order :
highpoint raid driver 2.0.1019
VIA 4in1 v435
AMD Driver Pack 1.30
Nvidia 2250's
Audigy drivers (CD)
Audigy update (download from creative)
very stable.

hi lee
i've done all the latest for sb / ge force.
also its got latest bios.
and its got the 4in1 ver 37 BUT not the AGP driver cos i found a site saying use the one from AMD not VIA 4in1 drivers.
its still not stable at correct speed.
dunno if could be dodgy m/b or processor or memory.

One thing I found out very recently which is a bit of an unknown -
Note: the motherboard accepts either up to 2 DIMMs of unbuffered DDR SDRAM (2GB max) or up to 4 DIMMs of registered DDR SDRAM (4GB max). You cannot mix unbuffered and registered SDRAM, nor can you have more than two sticks of unbuffered SDRAM.
if thats you, try temporarily removing half the ram. I had a machine with 1Gb in 4 x 256 which was a bit naff, changing to 2 x 512MB was fine.
and yes, the via - you don't install the agp driver , just the .inf
cheers
lee.

Mobo 761 m/board
AMD Athlon 1800+ cpu
512 MB DDR memory
ATI Radeon 7500 graphics
Seems to run like **** thru a goose. Averaging 70-80fps on RTCW on 1064x768 32 bit colour. V nice
Get 3dMark2001 from Madonion to compare different builds and see how your set up compares. It can be a bit depressing when you see some of the scores but you get a good feel for how you can improve your machine.
For the record I scored 4545
